Timmies Roll Up Give Away Car, Toyota?

Watching the local T.O news last night and their raising an issue that one of the Canadian lotto's is giving away Mercedes as prize cars. Under the current circumstance (CDN auto ind.),  I can understand why. Then I also notice in Timmies roll up to win contest the give away car is a Toyota.
Just one of those things that grates on me. I mean why would you not support the Canadian, at least North American auto industry.

These co-branding marketing campaigns are complex. Toyota has beeen the give a way car for Tim's for a few years. I think it was GM before though. These things are done on contracts and complex agreements. You make a very good point though, same on the Ontario Lotto Corp and the German cars.

When I hear people in the office complaining about the layoffs I look into the parking lot which is a sea of silver Japanese cars and ask them what did you do to help those peole keep their jobs?

Good for you Ray. I am guilty of buying Chinese stuff myself (ALL vehicles on our yard are GM products though) much as I hate to. It's almost impossible to buy all American.

On a happy note, today I ordered pushrods, rocker arm kits and valve keepers for my 327. Melling is the brand and I assumed I would get overseas parts. What a great surprise when I looked at all the packages and every last piece is North American made!

The Venza is built in Kentucky. The GM minivans that used to be offered were built in the U.S too...

So if they gave away Toyotas built in Cambridge, that would be OK?

What about Woodstock built Toyota's? It is getting hard to tell the domestics from the imports. Korean built Pontiacs, Ohio built Hondas, Ontario built Challengers, Ingersoll built Suzukis,....
The lines are blurred and getting worse as the world gets smaller. The favorite car in China? Buick.

Good points Earl. Very difficult to not think globally nowadays. I have to say that if it was a RAV 4 from Woodstock i wouldn't have a problem with that. So i guess that means i can't mind a vehicle from Kentucky, foreign or domestic if we're supporting North American workers. Wow this is confusing. Guess it makes it easier for me in one respect. I don't drink coffee and rarely go to T Ho's. I'm just trying to rationalize it for my own sake...now I have a headache.

it is hard to define the lines 'cause not everything is so black and white anymore, domestic and foreign, etc.

We just bought a Kia. The dealership made money, the saleman made money, the kid that wash and detailed the car made money and the truck driver that brought it to the lot and the longshoreman that unloaded it from the ship made money.

As long as we're buying.....Canadians make money.

The Toyota, though built in Canada, I would assume the money from sales goes back to the mother land? no? Isn't Toyota asking the Japanese goverment for a 2 billion loan?

Again it wasn't my message to Timmys...it came in an email..
What's strange is the email was sent to me by a lad I know (an original Canadian Copo Chevelle owner)...but the letter sender happens to be a fella I went to grade school with in Oshawa in the 60's/70's!.

I'll have to agree with that one, I work for a Toyota dealership and would hope that people buy from our dealer so I can spend more of my money locally. I'm doing my part to stimulate the economy by buying car parts and having body work done. LOL.

The problem is it is ASSEMBLED in Canada, not built here. Same with all the parts, built overseas then shipped here.

and the Camaro is ASSEMBLED in Oshawa, with parts from many sources, US, Canadian, Mexican and Austrailian.  Toyota sources components from all over as well, including here.  There are many parts suppliers in Ontario that provide parts to all of the manufacturers, the biggest one being Magna.

The engines in the Pontiac Torrent and Chevy Equinox come from China. It was great for me working at the local GM dealer as I managed to get the contract to fix all the engines that were damaged in transit. Then there was the service replacement cylinder heads that were assembled without freeze plugs. Apparently the factory in China would pull them from the line as service parts before the station that installed the plugs! Silly Chinese! We did over 400 heads!

There you go, g.m. should stop out sourcing stuff and build it all here. (I know free trade, wto, globalization) It has become economically challenging to manufacture here because of the little things.(decent wages, health benefits, pensions,etc...) But now you have a problem with all the people that used to build stuff, with their jobs gone to Mexico, china, etc... what to do with the actual people affected?

How many of you remember Pogo?

We all want more of everything, but at the lowest possible prices.

Or, to put it another way, I want a beautiful castle and I want my neighbours to build it for me cheap. But, my neighbours won't work that cheaply, so I import cheap labour and materials. The problem with that scenario is that when my neighbours want the very thing that I build and sell, but are unwilling to pay my prices, then they start bringing in cheap labour and materials too.

It doesn't take much imagination to see where this is all heading......lots of cheap goods, and everyone working at McJobs trying to pay for them.

Yes, our economy will soon be service based instead of manufacturing based....or is it that way already?
