69 engine line up Astro-

Just a FYI, we were talking about the engine names for pontiacs at Coffee last night ,most know about the Econo name but changed to Astro in 69. I only wish I had the  L34 Astro-Jet in mine.  Just have to watch what air cleaner decal you get for your 69 Beaumont.  You need Astro not Econo.  Was this the same for the full size cars as well ?

That is really interesting that they used the Chevy tag for a non-Chevy vehicle.................., or is it a non Chevy???!!! rofl.gif

I could tell when you mentioned it that you knew what you were talking about but it sure proves "never too old to learn".

My GM document says Jet Flame 427, is that supposed to be Astro Jet?

I have only had 396's in any 67 big block cars but they weren't Jet Flame. Hmmm, still learning here!

I beleive Jet Flame is for 427 only up to 68 but is Astro jet in 69.

Chevy!  Carl you are slipping, since when is "astro" a chevy moniker?
Chevys were always "turbo-fire"

I think the "astro" moniker was used on canadian pontiacs, even back to 64 or 63.
I guess the Econo name was dropped on the beaumonts in 68 as Ian has pointed out.
Nice Observation Ian!

You're right, I must have a Buick brain today! Actually, isn't it turbo jet, not turbo fire?

Or is it even more or my Buick brain???

You are most welcome

p.s.  we are both right, early cars are turbo-fire,  later ones are turbo jet.

It all depends on year but here is how it generally works:

Turbo Fire - small block chevy

Turbo Jet - big block Chevy

Astro Flash - small block Canadian Pontiac

Astro Jet - big block Canadian Pontiac

Now the terms Astro Flame, Flame Jet, Jet Flame Super Flame, Flame, Strato Six, Astro six were also used for Canadian Pontiacs depending on year and size.

Econo was never used for the full sized B bodies, just in the A bodies.

It would make a good research project to put together a chart.

Good Idea, Just need info from Sales brochures or the info pack from GM as were I got my info from.  I have seen a lot of incorrect Aircleaner decals on pontiacs at car shows. Would be nice to have a correct list.

Pretty sure 1969 was the last year for naming the various engines like that. In 1970 all the decals said was PONTIAC 454 or 400, can't recall seeing a 350 air cleaner decal. Canadian Pontiacs still had fender flashes or rocker flashes or grille flashes with the engine size in 1970 though.

I put a copy of my docs on the 63-70 production numbers listing & it definitely says Jet Flame V8. I wonder if Zapora would know the answers to this ??

There is no question that Jet Flame was used for big blocks thats 100%, my memory suggests up to 1968. Here is a link I found on the web, not sure if it helps or not but I thought it did:

There is no problem with your car, Jet Flame is correct for Canadian Pontiac 427's .
Its just Beaumont did something diferent in 69, switched from Econo to Astro moniker. If your restoring a 69 Beaumont you just need to remember to use the correct decal.

Invader 427 was the name used in the GMC line, so given Pontiac Dealers sold GMC that is my answer.

I understood that Invader was used on GMC Sprints, but Sprints did not come out till 71 so no 427's then.
