Outdoorsmen, help me identify this footprint please

I suspect I have a raccoon living on the island. I just can't figure out where he is living. I have a live trap set with balogna and lettuce in it. Last night he was within 6 feet of the trap by the look of the footprints but he never went in.

What is this? Would he swim the 10 feet from the trees or is he here with me. If so, he must be hiding in one of the old vehicles, but where would he hide? He's not under the hoods.

There are more raccoons in  the City of Toronto than at our cottage. We never see them in daylight but they roam the city streets at night like a wild herd. They live in trees, high up. They are crafty little pests, most of them know how to open the latches on the City provided Raccoon Proof garbage conatiners too.

I can confirm everything Ray said but even though I only live a couple of miles from him, my area seems to have spawned a mutant type of racoon that is now even coming out in the day time.  I estimate some are approaching 40 pounds in size and these are not cute cuddly things, they are vicious, mean and destructive.  One literally broke into my garden shed a couple of years ago and her litter there.  They are completely out of control here in the city, no predators and tons of food.  I can't think of a single garbage day where they haven't gotten into at least some of my neighbours bins overnight and made a mess of the street.furious
So to answer you question Carl, yes, that is coon print and it looks like a big one as well, must be on vacation from Toronto!  BB guns are useless against them, if you have something stronger, take it out now.  If it gets used to your place and takes up permanent residence, it will cause you no end of headaches, and it's not as if they are endangered speices or anything...disbelief

I have to admit to pulling out the Crossman and popping a few from the bedroom window. It just scares them off for a minute or two and they return with more determination.

Now the best one was the night my oldest Airedale caught one by the tail with the other two snarling at it. You'd think it would turn and fight but I guess 3 Airedales was a bit intimidating. It finally broken free and scrambled up the fence into a tree.

Had a mother racoon make her new home in my parts shed years back. I think she had about 6 young. They ate and destroyed a 68 Beaumont black interior and a 69 Chevelle black interior. Door panels, seats, seat belts, arm rests (plastic and vinyl pads). After "Momma" moved out and all the kids were gone, cleanup began. I'll never forget the mess and that smell...

Carl, like Ray and Hillar said, get rid of it as fast as you can. If you trap it, where can you let it go?

Wow, he's a big one.
We had a fairly large one trying to open our garbage the other night, I flipped the outside lights on and honked the horn from the car, he scattered and didn't come back.
Checked the garbage next morning, just one opening where he started, guess he went after the neighbors garbage after that. LOL

It says I need to log in. Is that the guy who built the catapult? If so, I saw that one a couple of weeks ago and split a gut laughing at that!!!
