1972 Chevelle Heavy Chevy- Big block 4 speed

Nice car. I assume the "454" emblems are wrong? I thought the LS3 402 was the biggest engine availalbe.

Stripes and cowl hood are wrong also. Heavy's never had a flapper hood and had body side stripes not skunk stripes.

my friend had a documented low mileage survivor 72 Chevelle SS 454 bucket seat 4 speed car.  I can't remember if it had cowl hood (I think it did) and it had the skunk stripes.  Orange car with white stripes, still sporting the dealer sticker.  He bought it for I think $13K in the early 90's.  I thought he paid too much for it, but it kept increasing in value.  Last year he sold it to a mutual acquaintance for $40K plus.  He had a selection of big blocks in it over the years, but had the original #'s match 454 rebuilt a few years ago and put it back in the car.

Maybe I need to be schooled but I always thought Heavy Chevys were 350 cars, much like the Olds Ralley 350, the low end low priced muscle car.

Todd, Earl and Ray... You are all correct. The cowl hood had no flapper and only had the "Heavy Chevy" stripe package down the side. You could have had the small block 350 or the "low horse power" big block.

Still a nice machine that would look good in my driveway....

Also, didn't the Heavy's have the Camaro type rallye wheels with no trim ring? Kinda like the T-37 with the Rallye II and no trim ring.

Yup, they had those 14 x 6 egg-crate style rally wheels without trim rings with bright lug nuts & special center caps, rubber mat (not carpet), LS3 402 was the biggest engine (with optional F78-14 tires only), Domed (non-functional) hood with hood pins, Blacked out grill and headlight bezels, Special interior door panels with white stripes for 71 & wood grain stripes for 72, 13437xx VIN... these are a few of the telltale signs i've found online...

Here is a Chevy ad for the car, 307 standard and yes a 400 Turbo-Jet was listed. Been to school, so now I know.

Heavy Chevy The Very Sporty Chevelle

heavychvy.jpg

This is our new one, introduced the middle of 1971 and already a favorite. It's built around a Chevelle Sport Coupe as you can see here.

See the difference? You get a special understated black grille. A domed hood with lock pins. Special side striping and 14" X 6" rally-type wheels with special center caps and bright lug nuts. It's available only with a V8 engine (you wouldn't want it any other way). The Turbo-Fire 307 is standard, but you can order from three others including our Turbo-Jet 400. If that seems like a large choice, it is. But we know how it's fun to be choosey when you buy a new car.

Some other options you can order: special instrumentation including a clock, tachometer, ammeter and temperature gauge. And if you're that serious you'll want to look into our Positraction rear axle, wide-ratio 4-Speed transmission and power disc/drum brakes. you see, choosing is what the Heavy Chevy is all about. Settle for its looks or make it a h-e-a-v-y Heavy Chevy with options.

now that I look closer at the photo's I see the absence of the SS badging.  I didn't realize there was such a thing as a "Heavy Chevy".  The 454 car I was referring to was an SS car.

Most of them were cloned to SS trim. I find it a real treat to see an original one like the pic that Ray posted.

My neighbor had a Heavy when I was younger...cool cars that are seldom seen now..
The H/C RPO is YF3 and I believe is stamped on the tag of real ones..
A couple years back one of the GM Plant's Heavy Pilot car was on eBay and bantered about on a few sites..

Anyone know the '71 Heavy in the pic below...from Woodstock?
