I drive truck for a living and get VERY bored on the road so i started to count all PONTIACS to just civics for every 6 civics i saw 1 pontiac. California taxed its way out of profit. Last year i needed to buy a new gas tank for my ventura i paid $68 more for 1 made in Canada just to buy 1 sort of not imported. I try to buy North american except for trinity propane tanks because they have a leak issue american out of utah is much better.
Looks like GM is using GMAC to help foreclose on dealerships: Jerome Taylor, a well respected GM dealer in Windsor closed it's doors last week- thanks to GMAC. GM Canada expects to close 45% of their dealers. CLICK HERE for the story
GMAC is not owned by GM anymore. They sold it to Cerebus, the same people that own Chrysler. I am sad to see Pontiac's demise, but come on guys, Phoneix, Sunbird, Aztek, Sunfire, G5...etc. Who is interested in those cars? NO ONE! Mediocre cars do not build a loyal following especially if they are poorly built. Head gaskets puking out and then being fleeced for repairs with no regard to customers finished them off for me.

Dad had a Skylark-same as Phoneix-no issues over 12 years
Sunbird-every kid kicked the hell out of them-they were cheap/disposible served their purpose-lots still on the road and they haven't been built for 15 years
Aztek-I don't like it-never heard good reports but never knew anyone with serious issues-I'll give you that one for lack of knowledge on my part
Sunfire ??? whats its problem ? cheap/durable - lots on the road-every one I see has 200-250 km some with 400 km
Ya GM service/warranty sucks-equal to all the rest-
I still stand by what I said, If you want to continue to ship your $$$ to asia that's your business. I am entitled to my opinion and nobody will change it. If you are hungry and out of work, EAT YOUR tOYOTA!!

Can you see anyone having any interest in restoring or keeping those cars around in 20 years? I can't. Maybe it's because I'm old and grew up on '50's '60's & ''70's cars. I still like '80's and '90's Trans Ams and still drive 'em. But overall compared to where Pontiac used to be to where they are now.... it's hard to claim "We build excitement"
I've had some folks tell me that buying from an overseas company is no different than buying from an American company. Here's why I disagree........
General Motors of Canada Limited, although a subsidiary of the U.S.'s General Motors Corporation, has a wonderful almost century-long relationship with Canada, and was founded by none other than Col. Sam McLaughlin (of McLaughlin-Buick fame), Oshawa's leading citizen for his entire adult life. Col. Sam was the President of General Motors of Canada Limited until his death at age 100 in the mid-1970s and he fought tooth and nail for Oshawa and for the Canadian division.
And before anyone mentions all those profit dollars flowing south of the border, remember that our greatest economic partner on Planet Earth is........by far......the United States of America. When the U.S. catches a cold, we get the flu. Perhaps you've all noticed what's happening here since the recession began in the U.S.
So, even if there is no truly-Canadian automotive company, I deem it preferable to keep the profits within the continent where not only we reside, but where our largest customer resides as well.
Just as the trend is toward trying to buy fresh food grown within a hundred mile radius of your home, it's time we found other ways of downsizing and getting control over our dollars and our relationships with those who provide us with goods and services. That applies to those mega-stores full of lead-laden crap from China too. If you ever find me in a Walmart store, kick me in the gonads.

Earl-I agree with the no restoration of that stuff but there syre won't be any restoration of an Accord/civic/Pony etc.. either

Ken, none of that Japanese/Asian stuff will ever be worth restoring in my opinion. I've always liked certain European cars, but even most of them I would never get into a resto. A Jag or BMW are never worth the effort and they look dated most of the time anyway. I have an old Porsche but even it would be hard to justify a full resto. It will be a tough call to see what becomes collectible. I'm betting Trans Am, new Camaro, Corvette,Chrysler Hemi car, Mustang, and that's all that tweaks me. I was really hoping the '04 GTO was going to do it but..... Not a looker and not available here. The G8? Too little, too late and still not a looker. It really bugs the sh*t outta me that GM let themselves slide into this abyss!
It's sad but true. Back to my original point, if we didn't become a dumping ground, all you guys that work for import dealers, assembly plants, Et al, would be working for a north american company, the big 3 would not be in trouble, and an "import" car would still be a novelity, not the norm. Sorry if it upsets you, but it's true. You give it away (the market share, ie: dumping ground see above!!!) you will never get it back. Be interesting to see what the future holds as the same people that allowed this to happen seem to have no problem with open door immigration, and giving away all of our natural resources under the political correct guise of free trade. We have to start worrying about us 1st and the rest of the world 2nd.
My oldest Pontiac was a 1929(Oshawa built). My most recent was a 2000. And a bunch of in between mostly '70's. I have been a loyal buyer and keeper of the faith, so it truly is a sad day indeed
