How to make a cruise-in more interesting

Probably it's just me but now that the cruise season is open I am wondering how organizers can make these more interesting and engaging.

Does this sound familar? Rush home after work scarf down a meal run to garage, dust off old car peel to cruise site, get lucky draw ticket for door prizes, park car, get out and wander around, see every car in 10 munutes, buy 50/50 tickets, listen to 50's rock n'roll music blaring from bad sound sytem. Make small talk about cars and women with people you barely know, Hang a round with other old guys until dark and draws take place, go home.

When I ask my wife or kids to come the answer is always No, is it any wonder based on what I just described.

Anyone got any interesting twists to their local cruise? I'd love to hear about them.

Your point is well taken. What makes your local cruise fun and a can't miss evening? I'm dying to know because my point is attendees are a dying demographic and I've heard every 50's song eighty times by this time in my life even though most of the cars at the cruise in are from the late 60's and 70's.

Ray,

I believe that most cruise-ins are the same; which is why I rarely attend. Occasionally, I'll travel some distance just to see different cars.

Nothing matches driving these old cars, so I wonder if an organized "cruise-out" from the "cruise-in" would help to relieve the boredom. In other words, after most cars have arrived, everyone lines their cars up for a slow cruise around town, returning to the lot after a half-hour or so. Maybe a different route each week.

you are not going to like my answer. i made a deal with my wife. i don't drag her to cruises, flea markets and such and she takes her friends to chic flicks, plays, operas and such. My son likes going to the cruises for the junk food and games. i go because i like the camaraderie, and hanging with like minded individuals who share the same interest. i really don't go for the prizes because my beast is only an apple in my eye, but its nice to win even if rarely. my wife might start coming out to our local cruise at the Dub because it starts at 4 and will cover supper but she'll come with a separate set of wheels so she can leave when shes bored. I really like 50 and 60's tunes and have most on 45's. one of the best car show i go to is the Atlantic nationals because its held in a park with a playground in the middle. i know not much help but i'm telling the truth.

Yes, that's a good one, it always was odd to me that I would drive just to park for a few hours. That parade idea is a good one.

good question!   cruises around here are the same   it seems that the only draw is the 50/50   after it is drawn eveyone leaves.   the cruise around town is nice.   people would sit out and watch, if they knew it was a regular deal...

back in the day in ottawa during the late 70's early 80's we used to cruise carling ave in the evening stopping at dunkin donuts for occasional bench race then back out to the street. even farther back when i lived in brandon, they had two main streets downtown and everybody would cruise the two between 1st and 18th street

Thats a good answer Steve, like I said at the start it's probably me who is bored to death at these things, Bob's idea about going to different one's is good too for someone like me but in Toronto at rush hour the time most start up, you could drive  for an hour bumper to bumper to get to one. Pretty stressful in an old car.

The town just to the west of me had started a new club a couple of years back. They always meet at A&W there as the main get together point for the cars. On the 16th of May coming, as we did last fall, there is a show and then a poker rally to 6-7 towns to follow the brief or not too brief b/s session and meet/greets!!!
Then back to the original point of the get together and after that, in the evening, an older car movie is shown outside up against a building to mimik a drive in theater setting!! Just something a little different......

There is one exception here in Toronto, at the Canadian Tire Store on The Queensway in Etobicoke. It uses the same formula with a twist or two. First there is usually something like 300 to 400 cars there, parking is divided to pre 75 and post 75, the shear size makes it interesting. It is on a Saturady night too. Door prizes are very good, 50/50 can be $1,000, hot dog vendor plus a guy doing T shirts of your car on the spot. You get the post 75 cars out too so lots of late model Vettes, Camaros, Firebirds and the Hemi crowd. It takes about an hour to empty out from that one and there is a long driveway that spectators line on the way out.

i think they need more live bands, and maybe a "beauty contest" type show for the girls who dress in the poodle skirts and such. They do this for alot of rat rod shows down in the states. I would love to see the kids (and big kids) bring their kustom bicycles to show off, i think that is a good way to get the father and son/daughter to hang out and do something together. I love going to the shows for the eye candy and of course to meet like minded people also and i hope that if all goes well (car runs good) that this sunday @ the canadian tire will be the first time with the 59 el poncho!!

Live bands, very good one, Thornhill has Johnny Cean an Elvis tribute artist at the long weekend cruises in May and September, that adds a lot of energy. I don't see a lot of eye candy at the ones I go to though. Period dress is agood idea too.

I get bored of the cruise nights. The London one although busy gets boring real fast. I swear you could miss two years of it, go and find the SAME people parked in the SAME parking spots! I am also sick of the 50's music they play, again the same songs every time. I enjoy taking in a new cruise night just to see different cars and really enjoyed the Tillsonburg cruise night last year. I'd rather a bunch of us get together on a Sunday morning for breakfast and take the cars on a scenic tour.

Sounds like the best idea yet, a convoy of Pontiacs driven by well fed drivers.  hungry.gif

I like that idea!     I agree about the cruises, and the same people sitting, in the same chairs, in the same spots for years and years, and when I go, they won't even say hi, or raise their butts off to talk cars.. They have their own little groups and God help you if you show up with anything but their brand    kinda like high school...  they (who run the shows) don't even greet new arrivals..  whoops I better stop... I guess the thing to do is to mix up the visits to different cruises....

That's more my style. I only go to about 3-4 cruise-ins every season, just to see some cars that I have'nt seen before. We did a few Sunday cruises when I was younger that went to the beach(Pt Stanley) for a few hours then to the drag strip (St.Thomas) and ran a few times down the track.
Now that was a fun day. As for sitting in the same parking lot listening to '50's tunes over and over again, I'm with you Ray. No thanks

A few of you have mentioned the music issue. I find it goes beyond the cruise-in and all the way to the car shows (big and small).

Don't get me wrong, I like 50's music alot, but most cars are from the 60's and now, the 70's. The owners of these cars relate more to the 60's/70's era of nostalgia as well.

These DJ's need to "mix it up" a bit more.

Just my 2 cents.

Scott

You won't find me drinkling that beer. Even if it's free. Remember me saying we need to drive to other cruise a couple of years ago... Maybe we need to make the area a bigger one.

I love that idea of going breakfast at a distant destination. Not this Sunday (Since it is Mother's Day) but next we should make a central location for us Ontario guys and gather? Say Cambridge?

Drive out and take a scenic route back... My Motorcycle friends meet out in the country and ride for the day...
