RE: How to make a cruise-in more interesting

Probably it's just me but now that the cruise season is open I am wondering how organizers can make these more interesting and engaging.

Does this sound familar? Rush home after work scarf down a meal run to garage, dust off old car peel to cruise site, get lucky draw ticket for door prizes, park car, get out and wander around, see every car in 10 munutes, buy 50/50 tickets, listen to 50's rock n'roll music blaring from bad sound sytem. Make small talk about cars and women with people you barely know, Hang a round with other old guys until dark and draws take place, go home.

When I ask my wife or kids to come the answer is always No, is it any wonder based on what I just described.

Anyone got any interesting twists to their local cruise? I'd love to hear about them.

Yes I have the same problem. Here in Toba the y even have a add campain about  "Take a Kid to a car Show"
I go ussally to the shows that have multiple intrests. The one here in Steinbach has theirs in the musium grounds where the other part of my family can go from building to building looking at all the items. This keeps everyone busy and having fun.
I've been to one where they had games brought in to keep the kids happy and Dad could spend time on the cars and car talk.
I also like simple poker runs with the whole family in the car and a day of driving fun and meal afterward. Fun for all and if more clubs would do and orgnaize this they could make some coin for the club also.

Everybody is afraid of the old guy who spins the tunes at our local cruise, Nobody TELLS him anything, he's a freaking Music Nazi! evileye

I like what Earl was mentioning. I live near the drag strip and it would be great to have a car show there with people doing runs down the track. And with it not being far from the beach the cruise could be incorporated in. I know of another Pontiac club that does a car show at St.Thomas dragway. They did their first one last summer. I didn't go, it's not really my interest being newer stuff like Sunfires mostly. Would be something to get both groups together for a huge Pontiac-a-polooza. Otherwise the only shows i like are the big ones around here like Plunketts outside of London and the one in Bothwell. Bothwell has the swap meet too. Both raise lots of money for charity which i like too. I know most of the smaller ones do that too and i like that. Tillsonburg airport had one last year. Neat seeing the Harvards flying. This June St. Thomas airport is holding Wings and Wheels again with the Snowbirds. Maybe some of you in the area would want to come down and show at that one. Even though smaller ones do hold surprises. If i hadn't gone to Woodstock last year i never would have seen that Monte Carlo Aero Coupe!

Why do you think Woodward is so popular and has expanded into a week long event?  It's the opportunity to see and hear the cars cruising (and maybe a burnout or two?biggrin)  Same with Old Town at Kissimmie or any other similar cruise where everything is not "static".

As for the music, I like the 50's stuff but I can see expanding the music up to about 1975, the end of the real muscle car era, but I sure don't want to go to any cruise and be subjected to Bon Jovi or any other stuff from the 80's and up - this is supposed to be about a certain time in history!nod.gif

I like the idea of a parade/cruise, a meal or A 7 W burger stop, and then back to the beginning for a beer to end the evening/afternoon/day.

Todd appreciate the plug for our cruise in Tillsonburg!  Look forward in meeting you some night at the A & W. I will probably go to each cruise on alternate weeks depending on weather etc!  Bob Crocker

my wife was just saying it would be a good idea to go as a "club" kind of like you see with the greaser car clubs and such. Not every week but say once a month and that way we could at least talk to eachother at the cruise in and maybe promote the site. We both really like the breakfast idea and then a little cruise after, maybe even to a members house for a coffee or a light lunch after the cruise and talk and work on a car. Every so called area could do this and then share pics and stories, just like our breakfast get-togethers.

That is a nice idea Trevor, figures it took a woman to set it all straight. It would be neat to have several Pontiacs show up at once at the cruise location.

I usually go with 65 Camino and Astro Jet maybe we need a few more. Going less often would make it fresher too.

Well, there's lots of parking in the park behind my place. We just need to set a date where most people can make it.

Could always change it up...show one time, drive another, do a bit of both together. It would always be interesting i'm sure there would always be different members showing up one week to the next.  Could even do a charity event some time.  A poker run in all the areas and choose a charity for proceeds to go to.  Gets us recognized and gets positive word of mouth out too.

Sundays are usually better for me as I work every other Saturday.
I'm pulling a 61 hour week (13 hours just today!) this week so I don't really have time to sit down and figure out a date for a get together. Once the weekend gets here I'll toss out some dates.
