I feel for you. That sucks. When you pay some one that kind of money its best to get involved with what he is doing by droping in to see how things are going on a reguler bases.  A good mechanic will welcome you and explain were he is at. He is working for you not the other way around. I would not pay for whats not done.

contact the RC's anyways.. just to ask what recourse you may have.. sounds like he's got a habit and its' in control. Better verify that the stuff you bought is in the car too.. seen a "transfer" of parts before thinking your the idiot and you wont know any better.

or.. call some of the "boys" at 81 to give you a house call..

Call the cops and don't pay him a cent. If he wants anything tell him to take you to court.
Let him then prove what the jobs worth, if possible get an estimate from another shop to finish the job. At least you have possession of the car which is a good start.

Really great you've got the car back already before fighting over the bill amount!.

As others have said above;

- Be the 1'st one who initates contact w/ the cops!.

- Get estimates immediately of work necessary to bring it to the level of what was agreed on even if it includes redoing substandard work he's done..
Check carefully that you're in agreement and acceptable of all he's done first...motor and all!.
If you move on past these points, it'll be hard to backtrack also may weaken your case?.

- Get your paperwork organized in a progressive fashion from the beginning to getting the car back including all dates of importance and noting what was agreed upon at each visit..
Make sure to include details of all payments...checks or otherwise..

- Initiate legal action as necessary...Lawyers, Sm. Claims Crt. etc..

Think hard on the last part as life is short, legal costs high and from the sounds of things, this guys operation may be shaky at best so you may get nothing whatever way you go?.
It certainly sucks but sometimes it's best to first think long and hard about moving on and staying healthy without the continued stress and added costs of trying to recover funds you may never see?.

Good luck!

Is this guy a legitimate mechanic operating out of a shop or is he just doing this in his backyard?  He could put a mechanic's lien on your car so watch out.

Did you have a written contract with him that spelt out total costs, what was to be done by when, who was to supply what parts by when, who was to pay for what, etc.?  If not, it becomes a "he said, she said" contest in front of a judge which will be a crapshoot and you still might end up paying for everything.

Get some good pictures of the work, date them and if you end up in court the judge will see the photos and it may help in detirmining the case. There are a lot of "I can do that for you" people out there that only want to rip you off (in the old days they usually had sore lips or black eyes). I feel for you.

My advise to you is to wait for him to come to you with legal action. The police will have nothing to do with it and this guy is probably more scared to go to court than you. If you don't have a written, signed, witnessed contract he doesn't have a leg to stand on. I have been in construction for 17 yrs and see this all the time. If you have a contract with him all you have to do is put the money owed in a trust account with a lawyer and let him fight for it. It will cost him more than what the money is worth. I have seen contractors screwed by developers with this method. Wait for a letter in the mail but put the money aside just in case he wins some of it. He will settle because they all do. Make sure you get a notory to draft a document for him to sign to state that he doesn't have any interest in the car anymore if any money changes hands. It might suck but your going to have to be the prick on this one.

P.S
Buy a crate motor next time. Plug and play with a warranty.
