Todd before I get into the above, I will be sending you pics of the 61 Pontiac you helped me find this weekend. Anyhow the car is finally on the road, safety was done today, everything went well but! according to the mechanic there is two driveshafts on the B body pontiacs, I've had these apart 40 years ago but can't remember. He says there is a hangar bearing or driveshaft support that supports the driveshaft, according to him there is about 1 inch play in the driveshaft up and down, I'm sure someone on this site knows about this problem and if the 1 inch play is to much, and if it is where could I buy a relacement. Thanks guys Brent
that is a good question, i hope for both of us someone on here might know. Next weekend im hopefully putting it up on a hoist and looking at everything a little closer and seeing what needs to be done.
If it passed Safety today, the the bearing has to be good! If the car is smooth, the bearing is good ! If you need a new hanger bearing, just buy a Moog or brand name no China 2 piece is OK
Well I don't have any vibrations as yet, joints are good, but am concerned about the 1 inch play, is this within the tolerances or should I pull it apart, Whats that old saying if its not broke don't fix it lol
My friend had a 64 Chev Belair back in the early 90s. We worked at Harvey's in Winnipeg back then. Anyways, he took some of the staff from the store for a ride when he got it. He was gone over an hour and I was beginning to wonder, I needed some of these kids to close the store that night. LOL. So he finally shows up and it's making this loud banging noise, he says it's coming from underneath the car. Next day we jack it up and sure enough, 2 piece drive-shaft with a hanger bearing. (only saw them on trucks before that). Off to Canadian Tire to get one. Took me about 2 hours to get the old one off and put the new one in. We did it in the Harvey's parking lot. With a floor jack and some wrenches. Good thing it was nice out that day. Then I went home, cleaned up and went back to Harvey's to work for the night. Lots of fun.
