To all the cars I've had before, and the one in process ... an update on my SS396

Forgot to show renovated photos of my SS396 - got rid of the faded yellow (only color they had on the lot with a 4-speed  when I bought it) and replaced the worn white top (lesson learned: white ragtops are very very hard to keep clean), new-from-GM fenderwell trim, by then I had added the 8" Corvette rally wheels (note to Todd: see how good they look without beauty rings smile.gif ) and high-lift rear springs to help the L60s clear:

and I had peviously replaced the tired 396 with a semi-built (stout hydraulic cam, headers, OEM valve covers and air cleaner) 454:

Gone but not forgotten ...

That was a nice car. You sure took a lot of pics of your cars. I wish I did. I lost a lot of old pics when I got divorced. Have been asking freinds to look threw there pics to see if they have any but no luck so far.

Thanks, she sure was a beauty - I hope to have a 66 or 67 Beaumont ragtop some day. And actually I didn't take all that many pictures - usually only one or two - the exception being the race car, I have a couple of albums of pictures of it. Here's one right after we painted it:

Racecar6.jpg

Candy apple red stripes with flip-flop pearl on top, it was gorgeous.

I have gone through a couple of wives, and I empathize with you about losing stuff in a divorce. Number 3 and I are still happy (except for the usual household arguments smile.gif ) for over 25 years now. But somhow I lost a 8mm movie I made at the Union Grove dragstrip in 1967 or 68, had lots of footabe of Willys gassers lifting the front wheels in all 4 gears, Karamasines and Garlits dragsters, funny cars, jet dragsters, but that movie is gone, lost to some ex-wife cry.gif

Good luck on finding old pics! And be sure to take lots of your 69 Beaumont as you are restoring it!

Dave

Thanks. I raced SCCA in the Midwest US - Brainerd (Minn.), Blackhawk Farms (Ill.) and Road America (Wis.). Active 78-82, moved to Florida away from team, car sat until minor rebuild then team reunion 1987 at Road America Historic Sports Car Races, sold the car there to a guy who wanted to go vintage racing ... the car was a handler not a top end car ... good times but had already spent waaaaaaaay too much money and the body (mine, not the car's) was clearly wearing out, reaction tiimes not so good anymore ... here's one at that last race:

Racing4.jpg

In the pack with Turbo Porch leading, a couple of sport racers, a 427 Cobra next to me (I would catch him braking and pass through corners then WHAM he blew by me down the straights), a Corvette Grand Sport clone behind.

Sorry to say the SS396 is with me no more, it started life as daaily driver in Wisconsin and they used salt on the roads very heavily in the winter, say no more cry.gif

Cool, I am restoring my avitar as we speak. It'll be vintage racing as soon as It's done. Hope to be done this year but life get's in the way. Have a 4 gear Z-28 that I don't have time for as well.

Thanks. I liked the car white, but wanted something to pep it up, liked traditional down-the-center stripe but wanted something a bit different, and that's what we came up with. At the back, the side stripes tied into the center stripe pretty nicely, I think:

And back then, American 200-S 10x15 all-aluminum rims were readily available and cheap! smile.gif Plus I always did (still do) like how they looked - polished rims and as-cast centers. If I ever run across a set reasonably priced, I'll snap them up, if not for the current car (I don't want it to copy the Two Lane Blactop car that much) then for some future project.

Wow. Nice to see a period Corvette race car, and I mean a real one from back in time. Thanks Dave. Didn't know you were an accomplished racer!
My 1st Corvette was a 65 convertible. It was a local car for years and had been modified with flares , side pipes, no front bumper and molded signal lights smoothed off.

Mine was a 65 too -- a few more details in separate post ...
