I want a G8

I'm probably one of the few guys who'd rather have a G8 GT than the new Camaro. Searching the Auto Trader revealed at least two GT's at GM stores in Ontario with under 16k on them for around $28000. Not bad for 6 litre power! Has anyone seen a GXP?

I have not seen a GXP. You can still use the GM Canada web site to search dealer inventories. That's how I found my Deville and my boss's Impala.

I have a soft spot for a GXP too but mine is a 2004 or 2005 Bonneville, you know I love that Northstar power.

I don't know if the GXP is available in Canada. I checked GM's site a week ago and it wasn't listed. I pass two G8's every day on the way to work and the more I see them the more I like them.

Ya those Bonnie GXP's have the same Cadillac Northstar engine as my Deville, surprisingly quick cars with a 3.71 final drive ratio. Click here for one on ebay

Nice Bonnie. Always wanted one. What year did they stop building them?
Didn't know they had the northstar.

2004 & 2005 Only. production ended in 2005. This was the begining of the end for Pontiac. I wrote GM canada and said why not sell a Pontiac Parisienne based on the highly successful Impala. The Marketing Guru Vice President Wet Behind the Ears who wrote to me suggested that if I wanted a unique Canadian Pontiac to look at the Wave......No kidding.

GXPs were never offered in Canada.  I know some people on other boards who are considering getting G8s as well.  They can be modded to GXP performance levels for far less money than the cost of a GXP itself.  The only thing I worry about is parts support.  Notwithstanding what GM, Obama and the Canadian governments are saying, this is an orphan car, sold in very small numbers for a very short period of time with unique parts manufactured on the other side of the world.  If you get one, don't ever get into an accident.  Where do you think you are going to find body parts?  I don't think Holden is going to manufacture and hold G8 specific parts in Australia waiting for someone in NA to buy them one day.  I suspect in about 5 years you will not be able to buy anything for this car except parts that are not specific to it, i.e., drive line parts that are used on other models.

Kind of like how it was for our Laurentians etc eh Hillar? I don't think there was much available specific to these cars after 1975. Isn't there some kind of "law" that parts have to be available for 7 years after a car is sold?

I don't know, I think some consumer group like the Automobile Protection Agency might know.

I think the coming trend from governments is going to be getting more and more older cars off the road quicker and quicker.  Obama and all the enviro-nazis in both countries already want anything older than 2000 to be scrapped and all of us forced into buying hybrid micro-cars, allegedly only to kick-start the auto industry again.  I especially fear for GM, now Government Motors.  How long will they continue to be able to make Corvettes or Camaros?

Folks, if you want any kind of performance car, old or new, stock up now, I'm afraid their days are numbered...

Hillar, all I can say is as long as there are cars, there are going to be guys who will want to make it go faster.

When we were kids I'd be looking for bigger more powerful electric motors for my slot cars, when I drove my bike I would take off the fenders to reduce weight, I'd align my Hot Wheels so straight to reduce drag and it goes on and on. And I was a kid!

I have to disagree with you on the end of the "Performance Vehicle". Whatever form it is in there will always be those who demand more. Life goes in cycles too and history seems to repeat itself everyday.

There may be performance vehicles, but they won't be coming from Government Motors.  Maybe Fiat will still allow Chrysler to produce something, but it won't  be a V8 rear wheel drive muscle type car.  Challenger fans, get'em now, once the fad is over they'll be gone within a couple of years.  Remember Obama and his posse just introduced new fuel economy and emmission standards that require 35 mpg corporate average fuel economy by 2014.  And trucks are not going to be exempt any more.  If there are any performance vehicles left, they will have a HUGE gas guzzler tax on them which will lead to very limited sales which will lead to discontinuance of the model because there won't be an economic case for continuing to produce it.  The aftermarket will keep going for a while, that is why I said to stock up now on what is available, both old and new.

Ray, I hear what you are saying about cycles but I believe this is different from anything we have seen before, this is a sea change in the industry.  General Motors, once the world's most powerful and largest corporation, brought to it's knees, bankrupt?  We all acknowledge it will never by anything like the old GM any more.  Chrysler will be unrecognizeable in a few years and mark my words, Ford is going to run out of cash in the not too distant future as well.  Obama basically ordered the firing of Rick Wagoner because he didn't like what Wagoner was proposing for GM.  When has that ever happened before in the history of America?  That was before the US government got a majority share interest - you think they aren't going to use that to influence what GM does, regardless of what Obama may be saying?  Have you listened to or read what the new CEO Fritz Weaver, the Obama approved lackey yes man has been saying?  He has basically said, "we don't have a choice" and we will be doing whatever the government tells us to do.

disbelief Nope, dark days are ahead.  Let's make a plan to compare notes on successive anniversary dates of GM's bankruptcy and see how things evolving.

I can't disagree with what you are saying Hillar and Carl. My point is this and it's not demeaning or disrespectful. We, and I include my self to some degree too, are in an old box, we have to get out of that box, you know that is a catch phrase in business but it is true, we need out of the box thinking.

The writting has been on the wall for several generations that the internal combustion engine and fossil fuels were a dying breed. We love them so we resisted change. People will always do what they always did unless they are FORCED to change.

The internal combustion V8 engine we all love is basically 60 years old. We are in the year as we keep track of them of 2009. That means the internal combustion V8engine has been on earth for 2.98656047784% of time as we recognize it.....NOTHING really.  It's just that we are here at the same time and it is our way of life, we have never known anything else.

Life is going to proceed on with or without us. In two hundred years people will look back at the cars we drive now and in the past 60 years and have a good laugh. They will be driving around in vehicle with Mach speed potential and wonder how we ever considered a 13 second quarter mile FAST!

The unfortunate part about this is that as a hobby we are historians and while society values historians in general in high regard we have chosen to document a history that is fast becoming villified. I believe there is value in continuing to do what we do, but for now we need to accept, organize, articulate a plan and communicate it effectively.

We have a G8 GT owner on board here also. He hasn't responded to this thread yet. When he does I suspect we will hear him say it's the most fun car he's ever owned...

Pretty scary stuff.  Nothing but busses and trains, very Orwellian.

73SC and 65 Camino and I were discussing this the other night, we all should have been coming into our prime in about 1955 and would have had two solid decades of performance to look forward to...

Well Clyde Barrow and John Dillinger would probably contest that, they would say Ford had a pretty darn good V8 in 1932!  So we are really looking at about 80 years but I digress, your point is well taken.  I for one can't wait to finally get my hands on one of these: biggrin

Actually the real deal in terms of  performance is the 2004-2006 GTO.  One of best cars I have ever driven.  I have seen them as low as $12K US in the Autotraders in our bordering states and with the Loonie creeping up in value again....

We are very fortunate in being human beings, if we can come up with an idea there is usually someone who can make it happen....we have the technology.

Last week i saw in the local paper that a G8 was listed at just over $28K. What trim levels are there besides the GT?.. not counting GXP.
I still like them too...even though someone mentioned the front end design was taken from the Aztec.

base car with the 3.6L direct injection V6 and the GT with the LS3 V8, that is it.  I think that $28K you saw quoted must be for the base model.
