RE: I want a G8

Probably.
Makes me wonder with all this talk about parts availability if one should get in an accident a year or two down the road and no body panels are around does that mean you'll have a G8 going in and a Malibu or Impala when they get done fixing it...or a hybrid of the two???

G8 (base)= 256 HP

G8 GT= 361 HP

G8 GXP = 415 HP (US model)

You can get into a heap of trouble with 256 HP, you can land in jail with 361 HP and you could end up dead with 415 HP. Just my thought for the day. How fast does Jr. need to go Randy? Good idea moving into a 4 dr. sedan though. biggrin

The base engine is the same engine that is in the new V6 Camaro where it is magically rated at 304 hp, which means a base G8 is just a few tweaks away from having 304 hp as well. wink

The G8 has a 6.0 V8 so that would be about 366 cubic inches in the GT and 6.2 V8 in the GXP which is about 378 cubes.

The 2008 Grand Prix GXP had a 5.3 V8 rated at 303 HP which would be about 323 CID. This same engine is also in the Impala SS and Buick Allure Super. The Buick Allure Super is the nicest in my opinion.

My 2000 Park Ave was over a grand cheaper than a 2000 Toyota Echo and had 50000 less kms! I average 22mpg and have a better chance in a crash than in an Echo!

There may be performance vehicles, but they won't be coming from Government Motors.  Maybe Fiat will still allow Chrysler to produce something, but it won't  be a V8 rear wheel drive muscle type car.  Challenger fans, get'em now, once the fad is over they'll be gone within a couple of years.  Remember Obama and his posse just introduced new fuel economy and emmission standards that require 35 mpg corporate average fuel economy by 2014.  And trucks are not going to be exempt any more.  If there are any performance vehicles left, they will have a HUGE gas guzzler tax on them which will lead to very limited sales which will lead to discontinuance of the model because there won't be an economic case for continuing to produce it.  The aftermarket will keep going for a while, that is why I said to stock up now on what is available, both old and new.

Ray, I hear what you are saying about cycles but I believe this is different from anything we have seen before, this is a sea change in the industry.  General Motors, once the world's most powerful and largest corporation, brought to it's knees, bankrupt?  We all acknowledge it will never by anything like the old GM any more.  Chrysler will be unrecognizeable in a few years and mark my words, Ford is going to run out of cash in the not too distant future as well.  Obama basically ordered the firing of Rick Wagoner because he didn't like what Wagoner was proposing for GM.  When has that ever happened before in the history of America?  That was before the US government got a majority share interest - you think they aren't going to use that to influence what GM does, regardless of what Obama may be saying?  Have you listened to or read what the new CEO Fritz Weaver, the Obama approved lackey yes man has been saying?  He has basically said, "we don't have a choice" and we will be doing whatever the government tells us to do.

disbelief Nope, dark days are ahead.  Let's make a plan to compare notes on successive anniversary dates of GM's bankruptcy and see how things evolving.

I think Hillar has called it correctly. This is a fundamental change. In my business I work with a number of people from Norway. They tell me you can get large trucks & SUVs as well as expensive luxury cars, but if you want them, you have to be prepared pay huge punitive taxes, which are a measure meant to discourage the acquisiton and usage of such vehicles.

All governments are guilty of implementing regressive policies that TRY to change behaviours. This is how they get elected and ejected from power. Some the masses like, some the masses don't.

The reality is that my grandchildren will not be using vehicles with internal combustion V8 engines. I don't know what they will be using but one thing is for sure it won't be a gasoline power car. In WWI artilery was moved by horses, in WWII it was moved by trucks and trains, in WWIII it won't be used. Imagine the change someone born in 1920 has seen. We should expect to see the same if not more change in our life time.

Just noticed the comment on the Daewoo!!!
The Daewoo started manufacturing its cars with the Opel Corsa and Astra as its basic design.
Now the Canadian parts manufacturer has purchased Opel and Vauxhall and the Pontiac Wave may just be the start of it all!!
Like the Australian Lumina!! LOL!

By the way, the Hummer production in South Africa has been stopped!

On my way to work this morning I saw a very sharp looking silver G8. As I got closer I saw on the fender flashes GXP. This was near Eglinton & Laird in Toronto.

Are you sure it was a GXP or someone who might have just stuck the fender flashes on?wink  Did it have these GXP specific wheels on it?

not that someone could not have switched the wheels as well but that is getting awfully expensive.  Plus to import this car from the US you would  not only have to pay GST and PST but an additional 6% duty as this car is not NAFTA exempt being manufactured in Oz.  At that price range, it makes more sense to start investigating a CTS-V.smile

Hillar, lets just say the car caught my eye, It was in Leaside so not that uncommon to see big dollar rides BUT I did a double take and verified the GXP badges BUT I never looked at the plate, could be a US car, especially in Leaside where executives get transfers all the time. I know the GM of Pepsi Canada just got sent home back to New York, his kids played hockey in the LHA. Anyway it read GXP. Can't say 100% about the wheels, as I haven't mastered the ability to drive in rush hour traffic and strobe my eyes to stop the motion of the wheels on the car beside me. I'll keep my eyes peeled for it again maybe I'll get a pic.

I am another one who would rather have a G8 GT before a new Camaro but that stands to reason since I have 3 mid 90s B-bodies with LT1s.  I really didn't think GM was going to bring back any sort of rwd sedan with performance, thus I thought I would never own a new car again.  Well, 3 years ago Carl clued me in on the making of the G8s and he sent me a link about the proposed car and how it would look in the North American market.  I fell for the car right off the bat.  Now, how was the car going to perform was the question in my head?  So, in March GM drops the price of the G8 by $6500 and now I am more than just curious about how these cars will perform....test drive required.  Down to the dealer to find a GT model it was.  Good luck!  Finally found what I was looking for at Stampede Pontiac in downtown cowtown.  The test drive really put me over the edge and before we were back at the lot, I knew I had to have one but not the boring white one I just drove.  Give me "fast black" please.  No chance unless I was to wait a week.  I'm ok with waiting but in the mean time, a friend of mine who has no idea that I am waiting for this car, goes into the dealer and makes a deal on the same car.  Niether of us leaving a deposit and working with different salesmen, we were both non the wiser.  The day that the Panther Black G8 GT arrives, I get a call from the salesman to come and check out the car and see if we could make a deal.  In no hurry because I assume the car was dealer transferred for me, I make my way from Strathmore to Calgary to find my friend (from Strathmore)  at the dealership signing papers of some sort when I arrive.  I stop in my tracks and ask what he is doing.  He shouts "I just bought a new G8!"  I say "Congratulations, what color?"  He says "Black just like your car! (Impala SS)"  Well let me tell you how sad I got in a big hurry.  I had been waiting for 3 years to have a black G8 GT and now there was just no way I could buy the same color as a friend.  As it turns out, there was only one black one brought in and he was there first.  Now I'm very sad but at the same time I know its only a car.  The salesman then says that they brought in one of the bright red G8s in a GT.  I tell him " I'm just not a red car guy and that's that."  Then he says " its the 1SD package with 19" wheels and the stainless pedals plus this one has the black and red leather seats!" That was enough said for me!  The two color interior sold me on the red car thing.  I can get over driving a red car to have one of the more rare G8s.  A deal was made and I now I live in the thing!  Not quite but it has seen the four western provinces and has 13,000km since April 15.  I don't think I have ever driven a better overall vehicle.  The combination of performance and comfort is better than most cars.  Usually, performance suffers when comfort is a concern.  The G8 is the most comfortable and easy to drive 4000lb car I have ever been in.  It drives like a car half its weight.  The performance is wonderful.  I have added headers, a full magnaflow exhaust, a cold air intake, and a superchips tune.  The car bangs off 13.9s at the track in Calgary with ease.  Put 'er in D and push the go pedal. No wheel spin out of the hole, rubber into 2nd, grin lotsbiggrin, and she's all over at 101.6mph!  Now if that isn't the coolest thing!  My Beaumont with a 390hp 427, 4spd, 3.55 gears, manifolds and street tires, ran a best of 13.99 at the same track back in the early 90s. It usually ran low 14s due to wheel spin.  So there is my performance comparison of my G8 with a 6L to an old big block 427.  Not the same kind of torque as the big block but the HP is all there and it is very tame HP.  If you are at a lower elevation or better yet at sea level, it is safe to knock off  .75 seconds off of my 1/4mile times due to air density changes.  The night I had the G8 at the track, the air density was equivalent to 5700ft altitutde.  The same night there was an SRT 8 charger doing 15sdisbelief

Here's a few pics...

The 65 Custom Sport belongs to a member on this forum who I don't know. Made an attempt to meet him when I was taking the pictures.  Not sure if he didn't hear me or care for me taking pictures but he drove away hastily after I  told him "nice car!"  These pictures were taken at Deerfoot Mall where they hold the Spring Thaw Car S&S.

Todd, I'm with you. I hate him too!!! And I haven't even had a ride in it yet. That car sat here for a while when he came to stay with me during the flood but I really wasn't in the "car" mood right about then.

Hopefully it's back here again one day for a visit and if I talk nice maybe he will even let me remove some of the rubber from the back tires!
