Rewiring an A- Body

I've been having so many problems with the El C I'm thinking about rewiring the whole thing. Anybody done this before? Did you use a kit or do it from scratch?

Thanks  .d

It's starting no problem. Just think it will boost my confidence in it. You've seen the mess of wires. What do you think?

Rewiring it is a huge undertaking. I suggest we just clean up the tangled web for now, that will be a big enough job. Remember the column is from what, a 66 or 67 so it ain't going to be easy whichever way you go.

It'll be easier if you saw it in person. I have redundant wires and no back up lights. The gauges, radio and choke are tabbed into the fuse box.

Never been able to get the horn working through the steering wheel either...

Might be wise to rehook all that I have taken off and see if it gets disturbed again?

I found this setup. Reasonably priced, comes recommended...

Shouldn't be more then a weekend project?

That is what I was going to suggest, just replace the whole harness and be done with it.  Trying to figure out what is not right on the existing harness is like looking for a needle in a haystack.  Wht is the issue with the steering column?  I don't think there would be any difference between 65/66/67?  All there is are turn signal and horn contacts?

No four ways on '65's and earlier. The column in mine has four ways. Maybe I should locate a '65 column?

Sounds like you need a trip to Jackson's.

I'm conflicted out from going because of work until some time in July.  From talking with Steve and Fred, I understand their availability to be alternating Tuesdays and Thursdays, i.e., this week (today) they are going with Gus, next week, they would be available on the Thursday (the 25th), then the following Tuesday again and so on.  I think Steve may be available on other days, you should check directly with him.

Do they have a website to see what is there?

LOL, I don't think the owner even knows what a computer is.

You would be best just scanning all the pics that Steve and Fred have posted or asking them directly.

I'd think El Camino harnesses would be available through the Chevelle restoration supply places.  Depending on what your problems are, you could choose from a headlight panel harness, engine harness or underdash harness.  Re the 4 way flashers on the 67 column, that should only be 2 wires on the signal switch that aren't required on your 65 car.

There is such a mishmash of wires throughout the car that only a complete harness will (possibly) work...

Well, I had enough of the El C's electrical gremlins. Hot wired it directly from the battery when I was stuck the other night! So I ordered a new wr85 kit from Ron Francis.

Any tips/ideas on installing it. Seems straightforward...

did you check the Chevelle places to see if they had El Camino harnesses?  The headlight, engine & dash harness should be the same as Chevelle.  Only difference would be the body harness that feeds the gas tank & tail lights.  That'd be way easier than trying to figure out a universal harness with splice points all over the place.

Actually I just phoned up "Ron Francis Wiring" an told them what I needed. BUt after talking it over with another buddy I think it might be corrosion in the fuse box. Seems it's a two piece unit and could be corroded between the sections.

I'll knowmore tomorrow when I take it apart.

An up date...

Took the fuse box apart. Turns out there are connectors on the engine side plugged into the actual Fuse box. Cleaned the connectors and made sure nothing was loose. Put it back together and I've been driving it ever since...
