GM Canada: Vintage Vehicle Search Service - Shut down?

I just read a post from another website that the GM Canada VVS service is no longer available.  Has anyone else heard about this?         no

Nope. This is a shame if true, how will we be able to document the authenticity of our cars now? At least I have the package on my ride. But what about the next one? (sigh)

I think we should call George..   I think that if GM doesn't want to pay for the dept and its retirement costs, they will probably sell the info to a private source?

This somehow wouldn't surprise me, with all the streamlining that GM is doing I could see this possibly being an area they might abolish. Having said that, it would most likely only be Canada & not US vehicle services. If this is true it will really be a shame.

DO the U.S have a service, other than  Pontiac Historical?

Geeze can you imagine how many clone cars are going to show up? Even with the paper trail as it is now, there are more 427-435 corvettes with #'s matching paperwork than G.M built.

I read this info from an American GM site and they were clearly dissapointed as well. Carl is right, we should call George to clarify this.

It's another BS story!.

I just spoke w/ Frank and he chuckled but confirmed our beloved GM Canada Vintage Service is alive and well!!!

Frank clarified the '77 and up thing w/ me too...
Besides the '76 and older Canadian Built or Delivered cars, ANY US AND CANADIAN BUILT OR DELIVERED '77 and up Model Year cars can be documented by them too!.

On Pontiacs even though PHS has their own documenting service, if Canadian built or delivered you can get the Canadian docs from them in addition to the PHS docs..

Long Live GM Canada Vintage Services!!!

If I don't know where my car came from can they search for it anyways?

If it was originally sold in Canada, yes, you can get you the package with the options breakdown.

I don't think there is anyway that car was sold in Canada, it has A/C and a 300 horse 327 and no rust.

Canada did not build elcaminos at all
Nor did they build the chevelle 2dr wagon.

That is why there is no Beaumont Equivalent to a 2dr wagon or elcamino.

i am almost positive that Vintage will have no info for your elcamino, even tho it may have been sold in canada, it was not built here.

I bought the package for my 82. Has everything, all the options on the car, where built, ship date and dealer it was shipped to. Plus any extra info on the car. Same as you'd get with any of the older cars.

No, the criteria is either it was built in Canada or sold new in Canada, in either instance, they will have the info.

Exactly!.

The three scenarios for pre '77 vehicles being documentable are Canadian built and delivered new to a Canadian Dealer, US built but delivered new to a Canadian Dealer or Canadian built but delivered new to a US Dealer..

Basically, besides the all Canadian cars, if  it went in or out of Canada on route to the delivering dealer it was put on GM Canada microfilm then so is documentable now..

On the '77 and up cars, any and every GM car is documentable no matter where built or shipped new (but costs more for the service).

Just a tip, when buying a GM car from a GM dealer new or optimum just ask them to print your "Build" and they will give it to you. I suppose you could write it into the deal but I have never had a problem just asking them. I got it on my Suburban and two Cadillacs. It has all the same info George provides and more. You can go one better and ask for service history too and you get a print of all service perfomed at a GM dealer anywhere. The only thing is it is on a plain paper print out that says GM build System or something like that accross the top with date and time printed and not letterhead, might be better actually.

Huh, that is news to me.  Learn something everyday.

almost all the cars sold in canada before 1970 were also built in canada.
But with the case of the elcamino, it would have been imported if someone in canada ordered one.

I guess what i am trying to say is that if your pre 1970 chevy is an american made one, chances are it was not sold in canada.  (with few exceptions)

I got all the info for my 70 El Camino, delivered new in Saskatchewan in 1969.  They actually sold quite a few Elkys out west.

Same w/ me...

Both my '69 and '70 442 Post cars were US built but delivered new to Canadian dealers so the docs came through from George and the boys..
