Long exhaust life

My '99 Suburban has just clicked over 200,000 km , 200,227 to be exact. We have owned it since day one. I was thinking tonight as I was driving it, it has never needed any exhaust repairs, original equipment from manifolds to tailpipes.

I always thought I'd change it to dual exhaust when the muffler went but so far its good. If you aren't familar with the system in these big GMC's it runs dual from engine back, through converters on each side to just before the rear wheels where it joins in one huge flange to an enormous muffler that has a three inch outlet dumping behind the rear wheel on the passenger side. I'm not even sure making it dual from the huge muffler back would have any effect.

Anyway, its still running solid and leak free, 10 years and 200,000 km later. That darn GM crap quality! What do you make of that?

My 2000 Park Ave still has the original system however the flange between the front and mid pipe is looking a little rough. Hopefully one more year before I have to replace it. I'll likely have a muffler shop just cut it out and replace it as the rest of the system is good. A cat is over a grand..

systems these days are made with stainless steel. i wouldn't mess with it ray.
my '99 silverado has 326 k on the original untouched system.
2-3 years down the road you'll be replacing the aftermarket, rusted out, plain steel system.
walker makes much cheaper replacement cats, or a smaller muffler shop can install one, about $3-400.
put a walker cat on the wife's jeep a couple years ago. fit just like the OEM cat.

Not sure why, but OEMs have changed exhaust systems since back when (ahem) I was a wanton youth, when mufflers and tailpipes and all lasted for a few years then rusted out and you had to replace them, that's where the Midas shops (do you have them in Canada?) came form, and now it's all aluminized or SS from the factory, the Midas shops (or whatever in Canada) have changed their advertising to brakes instead, maybe one small triumph for us automobile consumers to not have to worry about constant $$$ on exhaust replacement?

Dave

P.S. I bought full SS duals for my 56, I expect it will not only outlast me but also my grandkids smile.gif

The mufflers still seem to rust out around here but most of the exhaust systems outlast the brake & fuel lines by 5 years. The factory lines don't have any protective coating on them anymore. If you have a GM your planning on keeping spray the lines with Rust Check at least every year.

Ya gotta watch the aftermarket cats. I see it all the time- they are 1/3 the price and last about the same. Sure, they don't rot but they have the bare minimum of the precious medals needed and usually only work for about a year. After that they trip the check engine light (those with post cat O2 sensors) or just plain fail the etest. We stopped offering them as an alternative to factory cats at work because of the comebacks.

I'm hoping to get another year out of the lines. When I bought the Buick I noticed the lines that kick up the firewall were bad so I coated them with rust paint and oil. What I forgot to check (and noticed about a week ago) were the lines that run across the rad support to the ABS controller and the lines that run from the controller to the MC- They are pretty rusty......

That's the same area as my '00 Bonneville Todd. Also my brother's '00 Chev Silverado.
Both of those have had brake lines changed at the master cylinder, down and forward.
