Sometimes you get lucky

Ever since I decided* I had to stuff some (reasonably, no 12-inchers, eh?) fat rear tires under the old girl, considering that she was designed for skinny tires of the day, and I was not going to do any frame cutting or wheel tub replacing or spring relocation or other 'major' changes (hey, this was supposed to be a lo-buck DIY project), I have known that there would be some serious figuring and finagling and finessing required, and I did the research about available clearances to inner fender and frame and all, and I bought the biggest tires that in theory should fit, and when I went to put them on there were serious installation and operation clearance problems which clearly related mostly to rear axle location, and so I invested in some new high-lift rear springs (and shock absorber extensions), and I had to use my trusty sawzall to trim the fender lips a bit (not so you'd notice), and everything was going pretty well, but there was one fly in the ointment:

The emergency brake [note: the emergency brake worked fine, and obviously I wanted to keep it, and did not want major modifications to it] idler arm under the car interfered with the driveshaft at full droop, given the new rear end height.

So I had been pondering long and hard about what to do about it, and adding 'spacers' to the mounting of the brackets was a possibility but easier said than done, and I was contemplating having the idler arm cut and welded into a Z shape or maybe a U shape, and of course there is always the worry about whether the welder will do it right or f**k it up and destroy the original part so you have to start over, so I was searching for a replacement idler arm, and went to my usual source, and discovered:

Just what the doctor ordered! And I don't even mind the $8 US shipping and handling (normally this would p*** me off) because of the fact that I do not have to search around and drive around (hey gas is not cheap) and worry about the end result ... instead, I got lucky!

I hope you get lucky with your project too!

Dave

* this was decided the day I bought her

Seems to be a never ending supply of parts for the tri-5 Chevys. That makes owning one a lot easier ,eh Dave?

Yeah! Part of the reason I bought her in the first place, not only a way cool car (Canadian Poncho!) but plentiful parts! biggrin.gif

Shhh! As you know, most people down here don't know about Canadian Pontiacs, they just think it looks a little different than what they are used to ("Isn't that kind of short, eh?")(actually they wouldn't have the "eh" on the end), and if we keep quiet about it, I won't be deported to Canada for violating Homeland Security rules because if that happened I would freeze to death in the winter which would mean this great old car would never be completed as intended crying.gif

TAKE OFF, EH - Iam still laughing about that one!

How did you mock up the license plate??!!

And ... we only use one down here (no front plate) although I could put one on the car and hang the other with my small collection in my garage
