Yes, the main difference between Canadian and American gas price (and province to province gas price) is tax.
With U.S. debt and deficit what they are, they're going to have to start raising taxes sooner later too.
I agree we need alternate sources of energy NOW. But I also think we need more efficient basic transportation. Seems ridiculous to me that even the econo-box cars weigh in at over 3000 pounds. Way too much weight to be moving around to haul one person from point A to point B everyday. We should be able to produce a comfortable commuter vehicle that weighs less than about 1200 lbs. 100+ mpg should be easily achievable with that using the amazing engines they're producing today. The Smart cars are a step in the right direction, but me thinks they should be one quarter the price. We might need to designate different lanes on freeways to minimize little car - semi truck interaction. Just bouncing ideas out...
No raising taxes - lower taxes leaving the consumer with more disposible income to spend creating jobs and a larger tax base and less dependance on the system
