A 64 Aussie Chev.

Hi, thanks for reading my post.

I am restoring a 64 Australian delivered BelAir.  The thing about our Aussie BelAirs was that they were built RHD using Chev, Holden and Pontiac parts..

The reason I am posting here is that the air cleaners used on our BelAirs were Full Sized Pontiac and I am trying to find a Canadian 64 Pontiac 4BBL air cleaner to suit a Rochester 4GC.

I have included a pic of what I think "may" be the correct air cleaner..I believe that the 4BBL 283 was also an option in Canada..I am looking for an air cleaner to suit this application.

If you think that you can help me, my email is grusfarley@hotmail.com

Thank you for your time.

Welcome Grus!.

Hopefully someone here has what you're looking for..

Is your RHD car actually Canadian built and shipped to Oz as a Knock-Down?.
If so are you aware it can be documented by GM Canada's Vintage Vehicle services?.
Here's the link if you're interested..

http://www.gm.ca/gm/english/shopping/parts/vintage

We'd all love to see some pics of your car...especially the cowl tag and dash..

Hello all, I posted this originally way back in 2009 and I am sorry that it has taken this long to reply to all your great comments and questions. Short story is that I was in the Australian Infantry and was posted at short notice on operations shortly after I posted this. I was injured and after going through hospital and rehab and eventually being discharged, I am now again settled and working on my Aussie BelAir again. Well, thats probably more than you wanted to know ;o)

I will try and upload some pics of her so that you can see what a RHD BelAir looks like. As far as I am aware, most of the Aussie BelAir parts were made in Canadian factories with the only difference being the RHD drive parts which are all Pontiac (the same as the Parisienne RHD which we had in Australia) and some other small details such as the windscreen wipers, heater controls etc. that are Australian Holden parts. I am not sure if the RHD Pontiac parts were made in Canada or Australia. This info is hard to find. There is a guy here in Australia that has started a website to try and work all this out (http://www.ozgm.com). The parts were shipped to Australia and assembled in the GM Holden factories here in Sydney and Melbourne (not sure if they were assembled anywhere else..).

So, I am still looking for a stock air cleaner that would have been on the "power pack" 283 engines that had the Rochester 4GC carbie on them. They air cleaner should look like the one at the beginning of this post and have the 4 7/32" opening on them.

Wayne, if you are still around please let me know and I will send you my address and we can work out a price and postage costs. Its good to see an arty guy on here and just as a bit of fun, we in the infantry call the arty guys over here "drop shorts"..comes from years ago when arty provided cover fire for the infantry to move forward and it seems that some of their rounds might have fallen a bit short ;o) All a bit of fun now days though and I have some really good arty mates still.

Well, hopefully someone may be able to help me track down one of these air cleaners and I look forward to hearing back from you and answering any questions that I can.

Grus

Hi mate, thanks for that. I asked him a couple of years ago and he wasnt making them anymore, that may have changed. So I contacted a rubber stamp making shop and did them up a template to make me a rubber stamp. Lucky I had a photo of the original stamp. Came back great, I just need an air cleaner to put it on now ;o)

Thanks for your input though.l

Thanks mate. I am trying to upload a couple of pics of what a RHD BelAir looks like, but they just won't upload! I've reduced the size of the files to around 50 KB and they are in .Jpeg format...Does anyone else have trouble uploading pics??

its because of the Equator.....

IF you run the steering wheel on "your side"  UP here,  the car would be on the wrong side of the road! ?

Note the car has the Impala rear panel, as the centre light becomes a turn signal indicator..and the 1961 Pontiac dash transposed, used 1961-64 in rhd Chevs and Pontiacs.

Of course, driving on the right of a car was the norm around the world until Henry Ford decided to manadatorily produce lhd cars from 1916...aping Napoleon who in turn aped the Romans who decreed that on all roads leading to Rome, a cart or horse had to be driven on the right.

As you guys know, when we lost Newfoundland to Canada in 1948, they switched to driving on the right..so it was not that long ago that Canada moved to the US-style.

I regret to say that to us 'traditionalists', lhd is 'wrong side drive'!

Still haven't managed to track down a stock 64 Pontiac air cleaner to suit a Rochester 4GC..I'm sure there must be hundreds laying in junk piles somewhere...

Actually, those are tough. Not many of those cars had 327's in them. Mostly 6 cyl and 283 2 barrel.
