At 6:30am today, GM emerged from bankruptcy -- plans to sell cars through eBay

DETROIT - The new General Motors will be far faster and more responsive to customers than the old one, and it will make money and repay government loans faster than required, CEO Fritz Henderson said Friday as the company emerged from bankruptcy protection.

Henderson said the automaker completed its 40-day stay under court supervision far faster than anyone thought it could, saying it would repay about $50 billion in government loans ahead of a 2015 deadline.

He told reporters the company now will focus more on customers, including a partnership with the online auctioneer eBay for people to buy vehicles by auction online.

The new GM will build more cars and trucks that consumers want and launch them faster than in the past, the CEO said.

We recognize that weve been given a rare second chance at GM, and we are very grateful for that. And we appreciate the fact that we now have the tools to get the job done, he said.

He announced that the companys management ranks will be cut by 35 percent, or 450 executives, including the elimination of its North American president position. Henderson said he will take responsibility for North American operations.

Henderson also said the automaker was launching a Tell Fritz Web site to allow owners and the public to share their concerns with senior management and he planned to go out on the road every month. GM also planned to test a partnership with eBay that could revolutionize how people buy cars online, he said.

We need to listen to the questions, ideas and the concerns of the people who matter the most, Henderson said.

The new company will focus on three top priorities, customers, cars and culture, Henderson said.

If we dont get this right, nothing else is going to work, he said during a morning news conference at GMs Downtown Detroit headquarters. Business as usual is over at General Motors.

The new GM emerged from bankruptcy early Friday morning as lawyers finished an all-night paperwork session transferring the bulk of the automakers assets to a company controlled by the U.S. government.

Once the worlds largest and most powerful automaker, new GM is now cleansed of massive debt and burdensome contracts that would have sunk it without federal loans. The new GM also emerges amidst the worst sales slump in a quarter-century.

The massive transfer of factories, money and intellectual property to bring GM out of bankruptcy was completed about 6:30 a.m. ET Friday, clearing the way for a smaller and faster company better equipped to compete in the brutally tough global automotive market.

One bankruptcy expert called GMs 40-day case the fastest ever for a company of its size. The speedy close marks a victory for the Obama administration, which now boasts two successful automaker reorganizations. Government and company officials had expected the bankruptcy to last as long as 90 days, but it went even faster than crosstown rival Chrysler Group LLC, which spent 42 days under court protection.

Henderson and new GM Chairman Edward Whitacre Jr. announced details Friday of the plan to make new GM profitable again. The troubled automaker has lost more than $80 billion in the past four years.

Henderson outlined another 4,000 white-collar job cuts, including 450 top executives. The company still employs 88,000 people in the U.S. and 235,000 worldwide. He announced that product development guru Bob Lutz will stay with the company as an adviser, rescinding his retirement that was to take place by years end.

He also described how GM will streamline its bureaucratic management structure to become profitable again. GM has said it will be able to make money even if the U.S. auto market stays at a depressed level of 10 million to 10.5 million vehicles sold.

Yet despite massive cost reductions, experts say GM must produce vehicles that people want to buy, and change its image to one on the cutting edge of efficiency and quality. The new automaker now must win back customers in the worst auto sales market in more than 25 years.

It is the smaller, leaner, tougher, better cost-focused GM, said George Magliano, an automotive analyst with the consulting firm IHS Global Insight. But they still have to deal with the problems that they faced longer-term.

Rep. Gary Peters, whose Michigan district is home to three GM factories, said the companys emergence signals a new era for the domestic auto industry and the thousands of people it employs.

With bankruptcy in the rearview mirror, U.S. auto companies will even more aggressively pursue new technologies, become more globally competitive, he said. Decades from now, our nation will be glad we did not let a global credit crisis put an end to the American automobile.

Im very much looking forward to a point where were operating in clear air, and the name of the company not being associated with bankruptcy and loans and these things, said Mark LaNeve, GMs North American marketing chief.

GM ranked as the top global automaker in terms of sales for 77 years before Japans Toyota Motor Corp. snatched its crown in 2008. The company sold nearly 8.4 million cars and trucks around the world in 2008, falling short of Toyotas nearly 9 million.

Once the largest corporation in America, GM held the top spot in the Fortune 500 ranking for 20 years before being pushed out of the top spot in 1973 by Exxon Mobil Corp. It reclaimed No. 1 status in 1985 and held it for another 15 years.

Experts say GMs success will depend largely on its ability to persuade consumers that its a different company, one that builds cars that will equal or outlast Japanese models. To illustrate the change, GM is considering a new name.

Turning a profit will not be easy. GM has piled up losses and survives only because it expects to receive $50 billion in U.S. government loans. Without the loans, its executives have said the company would have been sold off in pieces.

The Obama administration has said it does not plan to interfere with day-to-day operations, though it ousted ex-CEO Rick Wagoner and has been involved in picking the new companys board.

Most of GMs model lineup is expected to stay unchanged for now. But the company on Friday will probably show off its newer, more efficient models, as well as plans for a U.S.-made subcompact and rechargeable electric vehicles.

In addition to the U.S. governments 61 percent controlling interest, the United Auto Workers union gets a 17.5 percent stake of the company through its retiree health care trust, and the Canadian government will control 11.7 percent. The remaining shares went to bondholders of the old company.

The parts of GM not moving to the new company will become part of old GM, a collection of assets and liabilities that will be sold to pay creditors.

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

For me the worst thing about buying a car is the Dealership, dealing with somebody who knows a fraction of what I know about the car I want to buy and screwing around with him for a couple of hours to settle on a price. I think the eBay idea is  brilliant.  I am a buyer, not a shopper and the dealership is just a multi-million dollar waste of money in my opinion.

They did a poll, and the results were reported on Global News last night.
The majority of  people are against buying a NEW car off of eBay. They don't like the intangible feel of the purchase.

It is said that ebay is going to have to report people's eBay income (sales) to the government soon as a tax grab (as a person's yearly income).

Like I posted before if GM really wants to be cutting edge, they need to allow buyers to "build" their car online FOR REAL with ONLY THE OPTIONS THEY WANT. Once financing is approved the order is submitted. The plant that builds the vehicle gets the order and is placed into the build schedule. Once a build date is determined the customer is emailed with this info. The customer also decides which dealer to take delivery from. The dealer gets a handling fee.
The technology is available to do this. I dont know why they dont

I hope they can pull it off. The custodians of GM ran it into the ground once; have they learned enough to recover this once mighty enterprise?

Don't you think that would put the excitement back into buying a new car? Say I wanted a new Camaro. I go to GM's website. I click "Build your Camaro"

I choose my model (base model)
Colour- I pick black
Interior- ok 3 choices are fair- black, grey and dk red. I pick dk red.

Now the fun part

Powertrain - 6.0 litre V8
Rear end : (say 3 choices) . I pick 3.73:1 with limited slip
Transmission - 6 speed manual
Suspension- HD thanks

Comfort and Convenience:

Since this is 2009, PS and PB are standard on all models

AC- Ok, I'll buy AC (that also gives me HD cooling)

Power locks- nope
Power windows- nope

Stereo- I pick the mid grade unit

Sunroof- no thanks

Wheels- I opt for the standard steelies. I don't want hubcaps because I have a set of aftermarket rims in mind and because I selected "Hubcap delete" I get a $150 credit.

I've built my car. I am told to confirm my order. My next step is financing. Since GM has teamed up with all the major banks, financing is a breeze. GMAC is also an option.

Now that the method of payment is confirmed (and I clicked the "I AGREE" box to all that legal stuff) we move on to build confirmation.

I'm ok with the "Scheduling your build- this could take up to 5 minutes" message.

I'm greeted with some exciting news. My Camaro is scheduled to be built in less than 3 weeks! Todays technology teamed with seamless integration between GM and it's suppliers has made quick turnaround possible. GM has already collected my address and gives me a choice of dealers where I can have my Camaro drop shipped.

GM was right. Twenty days later I get an email. My Camaro is ready for shipment. I'm given the option to select a pickup time at my chosen dealership after 5 days from today. I am also asked if I would like to purchase any dealer installed items (rust proofing, window tint etc). The dealers are also integrated and will know exactly what's to be done as this will all be emailed to them as well as included in the delivery pouch with the vehicle. I've decided I want a short throw shifter from GM Performance. The part's are automatically ordered and shipped to my dealer to be installed with the P.D.I.  I have the option of having the shifter rolled into my financing or I can pay separately.

Now, doesn't a system like this make you want to buy a car? No salesperson BS, no "taking the power windows and locks because you ordered AC". You get the car you want!

What about a test drive? The New GM has covered that base too. They have opened several "Ride and Drive" centers that allow you to test drive any vehicle. These centers are also set up with several kiosks with computers solely set up with the "Build your GM vehicle" software as well as many informative videos on the GM lineup.

Quick and painless.

Great thinking. For us in Southern Ontario what about pick up at the factory? A plant tour while your car is being built?

How about this?: Since every step of the build is tracked with systems like bar codes etc. How about when your vehicle is at the very beginning of the build in the weld shop you get an email, text message, Twitter or whatever telling you production has started. The factory could set up a few cameras at the more exciting points on the line (body drop, engine install, final run on the dyno) etc. You could log in to "GMBUILD.COM" (I like that) and once you've logged in you get a "top view" of the factory with the different stages labeled. Your car is shown as a little green dot showing it's whereabouts. You click on the large red dot (which represents a camera) closest to your vehicle location and that web camera appears. Sure enough, there's your Camaro (or truck or Buick or..) passing by the line. Heck, there's even an option to take a photo and save it!

Now that's what I want to see!

I WILL NOT BUY A NEW VEHICLE FOR THE SIMPLE FACT THAT I CAN'T ORDER IT THE WAY I WANT. TODD'S IDEA SOUNDS GREAT. I WANT A BASE CAMARO WITH ZERO OPTIONS OTHER THAN POWER TRAIN. NO AIR, PW,PS, STEREO OR CRUISE CONTROL, ECT. I WOULD EVEN TAKE A BENCH SEAT IF AVALIBLE. I HATE THE FACT THAT OPTIONS THESE DAYS COME IN "PACKAGES", IF YOU WANT "THIS" THEY MAKE YOU BUY "THAT" AS WELL. TO ME BUILDING CARS PEOPLE WANT MEANS BUILD THEM AS THEY ARE ORDERED BY THE CUSTOMERS PAYING FOR THEM. I'M SURE THEIR PAINT SHOP COULD EVEN MAKE IT A "GREEN" wink CAR, LOL.

Now that would be cool- if they had a colour palette much like on PhotoShop where you mouse over and on the other side of the screen is a photo of your car changing colour based on where you move your mouse over the palette. Once you pick the colour you like you submit and woila- it's part of your order. GM's state of the art paint shops would mix the custom colour on the fly.

GM- I'm available if you want to hire me! wink

Todd that is the kind of thinking that GM needs and you should be given the CEO job. I hate dealing with salespeople. That's in any line of work. They like to see you buy something but hate when you come back with a problem. This way you order and do all the financing. Get EXACTLY what you want, don't waste time listening to salesperson jabber and that is that. Got a problem? Just go to service dept. and get it taken care of. No muss, no fuss. Sounds so simple. Perhaps in our wildest dreams it will happen. Yeah i'm a dreamer too but i believe in the power of positive persuasion.
