FIRST NEW CAR

What was your first new car? I ordered a new 74 Gremlin X loaded. My father wanted no part of me buying the car. Because I ordered special packages on the car it was delayed for months. My father talked me into buying a new 74 Olds Cutlas. I rolled the car doing over 100 MPH. I don`t think I would be telling this story to day if I had been in the Gemlin. 17 years of age at the time. disbelief

This was mine.  Still have it. Kinda rusty now and has pretty much torn all the hair off my head over the years (At least I think thats what happened to it) but can't quite part with it.

I can see there is a age gap. Mine was a 2002 loaded 4X4 Ranger, lame ehh? Rolled it on a gravel road with 35000KM. It's gone.

1988 Mustang LX 5.0l going through college at the time I had dreamed about getting one. Every Fall my Dad would take me to various Ford Dealers to look and price them out. But when we totalled up the bill I couldn't swing it, until finally finsihing college and getting a full time job.

Boy was it fun and Fast! After a while I took it to Cayuga. Still have the timeslip with the 14.19ET on it.

I love the fact that the LX was always faster then the GT. 14.19 is a great time!

1986 Firebird T-top. 2.8 v6 auto. Sold my 80 Trans Am to buy it because I just got my 1st house and change of jobs. So I needed something good on gas and reliable. It was good on gas but wasn't reliable.furious  Broke down on me twice with less than 5,000 klms. on it. Never bought another new car until 2006.

Ray, my first new car was also an '81 Citation X11.  2.8L HO, 4 speed.  Red with black cloth interior, no a/c.  Somewhere at home I have the Car & Driver review of it, they said it had gear bag instead of a gear box.  I had a radar detector in the grill with the display on the drivers side vent, and a Concord stereo in the center console.  It was actually a good car.

The magazines of the day loved that car, the 2.8 H.O. V6 was a strong little motor, lumpy cam and dual snokle cowl induction hood. They only used it for a year or two. I scrapped all the AIR system and put headers on mine, Hookers, ran the collectors into one 2 3/4" pipe straight back to a dual outlet muffler, sounded like nothing I've heard since. I drove that thing with open headers about 4 miles to the muffler shop, WOOOOO. Traded it in on my next New car, 1986 Monte Carlo SS.

lucky bunch ! I never had a new one-I think the closest I came was in 1987 I had an 82 Trans Am, next closest was this year with the Olds van a 2003-looked many times couldn't see how I could swing it-maybe someday.

Ken, you say lucky bunch, for me I say foolish at least to myself. I bought so many new cars it wasn't until I bought my Deville second hand that I realized just how much more car I could get by letting someone else pay for the depreciation. My Deville is my first used car other than my very first car and I think from now on I'll be buying smart.  A good second hand car is a smart choice.

money to be lost was always the big hold back, but not sure I could really swing it anyway-trust me I was never short of cars in 1988 when I near bought a 1988 Z24 I bought a 73 Corvette-just I have cut/saved/spent wisely and never seem to have enjoyed the prosperity of that. Many say "what did you sell that for ?" Well because it was profitable.

I just stopped and seen a 1999 STS with 108 km-the guy wanted $7000 out of it-wow sounds good (remember the kms) but then I get in the 97 Lesabre with 81 km that I bought last week-I have $1700 in it-does the job.

Your right about others taking the loss-my cousin who is a chiropractor in the middle of a divorce is pinching pennies now-I got him a used Jeep under $10,000 then his daughter a used Sunfire convertible under $2500-he had a miled out mercedes and a really miled out dodge mini van that he's bought new on top of many others before that, its amazing how cheap cars are-and how much we spend on them-best is buy what we can afford-nothing against new-its gotta feel good

The one and only new car was a 84 Mercury Lynx wagon.   I owned it for 6 months and then sold it. Not one of my best memmories. Was one of those" what the hell were you thinking" times of my life.    no.gif

Every other car was my new one and someones old one.

Driving acrossed Ridge Road in Stoney creek at 4 am in the pouring rain. The road is tar and chip and when I hit bare tar the speedo would bury. The back tripped out and slid in the ditch draging the front in as well. I hit a concreate caulvert sending the car side ways in the tree line. Hit a number of small trees and then knocked a 4 an a half foot section out of a telephone poll. Hit a few more small trees and then a large one that did not move. I ended up back on the road on the roof . Hitting the poll ejected me through the bucket seats on the floor and the only reason I lived was because I was not wearing a seat belt. When they rolled the car back over the steering wheel was highest part of the car. Now when I see some young 17 year old driving like a fool, I know I can`t tell him not to because no one could tell me at that age.no

Had 80 Grand Am with beautiful black paint buckets 301 and traded it in for a new 88 5.0 hatch no options car . I remember picking it up on April 8th and driving it home about 30 miles sun shinnig and with Boston cranked up. The car was awesome and at about 5000ks the Gatorbacks were toast, lot of burnouts powershifts. I bought a set of Mickey thompsons and raced it at Sparta with the air box silencer modified /K&N filter/ timing bumped to 14. That car ran consistant 14.0s with a best of 13.98. All the mustang guys back then thought i had a cam change or gears but most of them couldnt drive them right out of the hole. Back then those cars were the best bang for the buck and i suprised a few Grand nationals on the street.Looking back at the picks of the Grand Am i really wish i would have kept it, pretty rare piece nice for a 400 swap oh well woulda coulda shoulda
