RE: 70 454 Safari...Kijiji, Calgary...

trying sort out logistics is like pulling teeth.  I don't own a truck / trailer combo, so I'm having to rely on friends.  It's about 4 hrs from my place, and while it's paved almost all the way, the last couple miles are gravel.

Do you have someone to pick it up?  A buddy of mine has a truck and trailer, don't know when he could do it or how much he'd charge though.
Can find out if your interested....

Yes, but my first thought when I saw the pics of this one were "That car has to be saved."

was a long day, but got the car and brought it back to Calgary.  LS4 with matching CB code turbo 400 tranny.  Disc brakes as well.  I hoping if I keep my fingers and toes crossed it'a also a posi diff, I'll check in the next couple days.

The frame is swiss cheese, the likes of which is rarely seen here in Alberta.  It sat down in the grass for 25 years, and the area on the drivers side where the cross member bolts to was non existant.  As for the engine, everything was there including the TCS solenoid, GF432 fuel filter set-up and heat stove.  Car was post mid year change to throttle cable, so kickdown switch is inside the car above gas pedal.

Are you going to put another frame under it Clint or part it? I'm looking forward to the photos.

Shouldn't be too hard to get a good wagon chassis in Alberta. Dale Flatla has a 70 Caprice wagon.

Your lucky that it was only 4 hours away!! Mine has been 1 or 2 provinces east and west!! (lol) That is a much better score for sure!! The frame sound like an exact duplicate of the one I bought from BC! Have you tried turning the motor over yet?

I did some work on the car today, including removing about 20 lbs of compost from the engine compartment (leaves, twigs, dirt, etc).  I checked the diff, no posi - bummer.   Body is real rusty, and some of the frame isn't even there.  I was hoping to find the protect-o-plate in the glovebox.  No such luck, but did find a 192 degree thermostat and Sears receipt when it was bought in 1980.  Here's some photos:  (that's my gold 70 2+2 hardtop under the car cover in the background.)

my buddy who helped me get it (his truck, his trailer, his barn where it is now) thought I was completely off my rocker.

I've now got the car up on jack stands, and it took a number of blows with the sludge hammer to get the rear wheels off the car, they were stuck to the drums.  I also gave the drums a few good whacks, and pulled the drums off, the brakes are frozen, and about 5 lbs of crap came out of each drum.  At first glance, the front rotors look ok, but that was about a 2 second look.  I'll see if I can get the driveshaft out tomorrow, it has one of those front yokes with the large ring around it.  I've seen them before, not sure why they're so big.  I just need to disconnect a few more things and the motor/tranny will slide out.

I used a reciprocating saw to cut off the exhaust system, pretty easy as it was pretty rusty.  The front collector pipe must be a tougher metal as my blade wouldn't really touch it.  Lesson learned:  don't lay the saw down with the hot blade somewhere where your finger can rub against it.  I now have a nice gouge on my left forefinger right below the nail where I sliced it against the blade.  I could feel the teeth of the blade, but fortunately the hot blade seemed to also coterize the wound so it didn't bleed all that much.

So, are you saving the wagon or just parting it? Oh, and that large ring is probably a viberation dampner. I have a few THM 400 shafts here with it as well, if it is what you are describing.

Congratulations sure hope it is worth saving. It will be worth a lot money one day. Not to many wagons are saved so it makes them a lot rarer. I have only seen pics of 2 other 57 wagons besides mine.
