2010 Camaro unveiling at our dealership tonight

We had some fun this evening at our dealership.  As some of you know, our Chev store was cut by GM after almost 50 years in business. We have until year end. One bright spot is they still gave us the sold order we had for a new Camaro, a beautiful black RS/SS with most of the toys on it. We had it in the showroom today and tonight, thanks to a very gracious buyer, we had an "unveiling" in our little town of about 400 people. We likely had about 50-75 people through in the hour that it was held.  Free pop, snacks, etc. The buyer is a grandma who just turned 50 a week ago today. Pretty nice of her to let us do this I thought. This car is going to be pampered big time. I told her the boys are going to be pounding down her door in 20 years trying to buy that original owner little old lady car with low miles (she has NO plans to rack up a lot of miles on it!) She has been a customer of ours as long as I've been there or more (about 25 years) and takes excellent care of all her vehicles, most of them being black as well!!!

That's pretty cool all around. Looks like you're leaving GM in style anyway, leaving no cause for complaints.

Must be an Auto tranny. Mine was built June 30th and is stuck in QC hold. There is a problem with the 6 speed manual trannys. No word on what the problem is or when they will release them. I also said I would let the dealer keep it on the floor for a while but the summer is slipping away. Convertible will be out in a year an some .

Yes, it's an auto. I tried to talk her into a manual but her job has her in a manual trans truck a lot of the time and she said she wanted her "cruiser" to be relaxing!

Cool stuff Carl and very admirable how your dealership is still operating considering the circumstances..
Your DP is obviously a class act and it's a shame to know his operation and team will be dissolved..

Any pics of the happy Camaro owner?.

Remember when all the new cars were revealed that way? Nice to see it still happens some places.

That is very cool!  Should have put brown craft paper all over the windows like they did in the 60's and then ripped it all down!

Convertible is "scheduled" to start production in the first quarter of 2011.

I wouldn't be worried too much about the manual transmission itself, it is the same one they use in the Vette and a host of other cars so I doubt the problem is internal; it must have something to do with the linkages or the particular set-up in the Camaro.

It appears to be a quality control issue with the Tremec 6060 six-speed gearbox, that occasionally results in a broken output shaft durng a hard launch. A factory hold has been put on deliveries of manual transmission "V8" Camaros while Chevrolet engineering teams investigate the problem.

This is the same transmission fitted to the Dodge Viper, Mustang GT500, Corvette Z06 and other performance cars so this is likely a manufacturing issue with a batch of gearboxes.

If Camaros are breaking these trannies, Vipers and Z06s must be launching them into outer space. rofl.gif

Got the call at 11 am that the Camaro had arrived at the dealer. Told the wife I needed picked up at the dealer because I had the Van in for service. Showed the car to her and said Happy 25 Anniversary! She said its too big, still wants a Solstice.confuse

Our son and I were in one of the service bays working on his Roadmaster tonight. My boss was there moving the Camaro into the area for delivery tomorrow. He was all smiles when he was saying how much fun he had last night with the "unveiling". I told him that's how things should still be done at dealerships and how much I enjoyed it too. I just find it sad that we enjoy our work at the dealership so much and it will all be taken away at the end of the year.

I hear ya, Carl.  If a dealership is profitable for it's owner, I don't see how it can be such a big burden on GM.  It's not as if you have any competition near by either.  It's like GM is just resigned to permanently reducing its market share.blankstare.gif

It really is cool to see something like this...brings back some of the excitement for everyone who got to be there. Means that some of the kids there will have had an experience that i never even got to have...our local dealerships never had unveilings like this.  I still did enjoy going with my dad to see the new cars and sit in them all in the showroom.  The one we always went to was the local Pontiac/Buick/GMC dealer.  I still remember all those new cars in the mid 80's.  Wish i could have been able to see all those great 50's and 60's cars waiting for their first owners.  Still, was cool for a 9 year old to sit behind the wheel of a new 84 Fiero and Firebird.  It makes one wish that the auto industry would do these kind of things to rekindle the magic and excitement.

Interesting follow up to this Camaro---

She left our dealership with it around afternoon coffee break today. She lives almost an hour away from us. About 30 minutes later I was on the phone with the parts manager at a dealership near her home and mentioned she was heading home with her new Camaro. He told me they were having a wild rain storm and that it may even hail. When I finished that call, I got her cell number from our salesman and called her. She was surprised that the weather was bad where she was headed and decided to seek shelter at a friend's place near Winnipeg until the storm passed. She sure thanked me for calling. I couldn't stand the thought of a brand new shiny RS/SS Camaro getting hailed before it even made it to it's new home!

I wish some one had let me know hail was coming. Almost a year to the day the wifes 7 day old, 125 km HHR SS took a $6,000 pounding.

Can't blame someone for wanting to trade for your car Carl...it's a sweet ride...so is the Camaro.
