Parts counter story from another forum.....

From a Nova forum I read.......

Bought new wipers for my '65 Chevelle today.... Had one in my hand so I could get the right size, put it on the counter... The young guy asks 'make and model, etc....' So I humor him; customer standing behind me in line sighs... The clerk is going through the list of questions I know he has to fill in. He hits the 4 bbl carb button and I say, 'wait, it came with a 2 bbl originally--' He goes back and changes the answer...cool.gif I'm totally playing with the guy by now. The customer behind me picks up my blade from the counter and pulls a tape measure from his belt- walks away, comes back with two 15" wipers for me! Now the clerk sighs... As I was getting my change, the customer says 'I need a short water pump for a small block chevy'. As I walk out the door the clerk says, 'what model and year??' I'm standing in the parking lot putting the blades on as the guys comes out a couple of minutes later just laughing, but he had a water pump

The new part person doesn't have a clue about our old cars, Usually they know more about rice rockets than old school stuff. The new parts system requires u input all the crap to build a car before tell what u should need. Ya have to go to the old school guys to get old school parts. LOL. Sorry,  I do know what u are talking about though.

I use one of the jobber store websites at work sometimes to look up parts. Sometimes some of what I have to input to get the part looked up makes me laugh too!

Cool  story      I was in Car Quest Thursday, and asked young lady for "small block Chevy" valve cover gaskets..... She started off with the same questions..  what kind Chevy? what engine?    I laughed and said 55-86   She did have them   biggrin

Yep, on the CTC screens, u-joints are under the engine heading not under the drive line heading. Go figure.

Just try getting the "correct" water pump for a 1979 Buick 350.
These cars had Chev or Olds or Buick engines.
Tell the parts person it's a Buick.
Look at the part they bring and tell them again it's a Buick.
Order part in tell them again it's a Buick.

Ended up going to the "right" store to order it. The "right" store is half an hour away from home or 1 hour away from work, other stores are 5 minutes away.

I am willing to bet the Acadian/Beaumont situation in the 60's must have been a parts man's nightmare with one being a Chevelle and one being a Nova yet having the same name.

At kragen I can't give them my car. I have to order the parts for a 75 Buick apallo or i will get pontiac or chevy parts everytime. Ordered a water neck came in with the part showed it to the guy he comes out with the chevy. Told him thats not it he tells me you are wrong it says right here this is it. And don't dare look for anything related to a 59 elk they don't exist on their computers.

My nephew went to Canadian Tire today to pick up a fan belt for his boat (Chevy 4 cylinder inboard) and the clerk in automotive tried to send him to the hardware department....
