Im just gonna break down and ask for help and see if anybody in the area of london, ont. would be willing to come over and help me get the 59 running how it should, and more importantly, what i have to change and fix to make it right. Its been fine until a couple nights ago when i went for a little tour and now it seems to be running rough, especially when i put it to the floor. I am just not experienced enough to get it right. I will provide food, drink, money, whatever one wants. I have a pool so even the wives could relax in the sun and go for a dip. Im off tomorrow so im going to play around a bit and see if i can fix it but a fresh and experienced set of eyes would also be an asset. thx guys.
I'd love to come and help Trevor but I'm toast at least until Saturday. Do you have CAA? If so you could tow it to my place or Tiny's. He'll get it running. Small Block Chevies are his spec-i-al-ty!
Thanks guys. It is running its just feels like its not firing right almost when i hard accelerate. The one thing i thought of in my sleep was if there is not a lead supplement in the gas or can a carb float kinda go outa whack? Im not in a big hurry so i will play with it a bit and try and pinpoint whats going on and then if need be bring it to Tiny. Thx guys, and Todd, if you are planning to go to the canadian tire cruise on sunday maybe we can get together before the show?
Trevor if i knew more i'd come help out sometime. As it is i'm looking to get some experience but need an experienced sensei myself. For me it's a question of just not knowing where to start to fix the problem!

Unless the plugs/wires are bad it sounds like it may be distributor and/or points related.. Keep in mind that those old coils would sometimes break down at higher revs too while performing fine at idle..
Good luck!.

Thanks Todd, let me know, we can grab a bite beforehand. I do have the points still (im gonna try to put in a dist. soon) and i have a new coil. Now just a minute ago i went out and thought i should check my tranny level because ive had a little leak. Took out the plug and nothing!! I guess it leaked more than i thought. Soooo, if that is the case, could it be that what was making it run like junk was because not enough go-go juice in the tranny? Im going to try and fix the leaking plug issue today (threads are messed up) and i will get back and tell ya's if that was it.
well, it was just the tranny fluid. I fixed the leak, took it for a spin and no stuttering. I geuss the slow leak was worse than i thought. Thanks for the suggestions guys.
shes running fine but i do need a new battery. Also, if I were to put in an electronic ignition, how would i go about wiring that? Ive done some research but im unsure about it still. Or, should i just get the electric points conversion thingy? I have a new coil, wires, and cap.

The nice thing about the HEI set up is that you need only one wire, as WE all know!!! Easiest way I found is to go direct to the fuse block. My cars and an "IGN" spade right there waiting for my terminal... I, to be correct about it, always cut as much wire going originally going to the distributor in the donor car, and installing it into the recipent car. This way it has the proper connector to the distributor for that "factory" look!!! But then I removed all of that and installed injection....
The short of it, just wire it into a good ignition source, power with key in the run and start positions only!!!
The points conversion is MUCH easier to do. The instructions that come with the Pertronix kit are pretty straightforward. I did my Triumph when I had it and it made a HUGE different. Some much so that my wife even commented on how the car ran better so you know it had to be HUUUUGE!
67 Poncho is correct HEI is easy to hook up. One wire. Just make sure you have it wired for keeyed 12 volts source. The coil wire you have now is only 9 volts. The resister cuts it down from 12 to 9 for the coil. HEI need 12 volts to work.
i fixed the battery issue, turns out that when i wired in the alt. I screwed up one of the wires. One of those things i should have seen awhile ago, oh well. Now, since i got that fixed i decided to go for a little drive with the wife and go get an ice cream (sometimes you have to bribe them to go for a ride!!) and on the way back it started to stutter again. Its too dark now to check the tranny but i dont believe its leaking so if i can swing it then i'll run out and get the pertronics kit and try that. If anybodys in town tomorow and can come take a quick look let me know, it would be greatly appreciated, and i can make some food or whatever. thx guys and girls
wife spent all the money like usual so no pertronix kit right now, plus we have to save for a trip to New Brunswick. So with the hei what do i do with the wire going to the points dist. ? (The little brown or tan one i think) Does that not go to the solonoid?
scratch the last post. I looked at the wiring diagram (it usually helps eh!) and what do i do with the two wires that go to the positive side of the coil (they go to the solonoid from what i see) ones a 20 drk green and a 16 violet. The violet one looks like it may be the neutral safety if that makes any sense. I dont have an ign. spade on the fuseblock. I will be useing the dist. that was on my late 70s early eighties 305 engine, Delco Remy.

Leave the starter wires alone. Just remove from the positive side of the coil, tape and tuck away... Test your open pins at the fuse block with a test lamp to see if you can locate and "IGN" source. If not, at the fuse block, find the 10-12 gauge pink into the box or tap in at the ignition switch, test for power in run and start but make sure you have no power in acc!!! If you have the pink one, you will be OK!!!
This is the pic I posted last night with the write up.....
Since I couldn't take a pic last night and I forgot about it till I saw this post, I took a pic of my '67 Grandes fuse box. Note the "IGN FUSED" terminal? This is what I used on several of my cars when I switched them to HEI. I didn't have an issue with the existing fuse, so that was left as was! The nicest thing, I have found, is that you run the "original" donor HEI wire to this spade, plug it into your distributor cap, and away you go... That's it!!!! This terminal is is all '65-'70 full size Pontiacs and Chevrolets that I have seen. If not, please correct me.
Here is a pic as well............... Underlined in RED!!

on my wireing schematic the pink wire is 14 pink and goes to the fuse block. does this mean 14 gauge wire? If so then what your saying is just run a wire from the dist. to the pink one and tap into it? its that easy. Should i take the wires off the starter too just to be safe and tape both ends off? I dont know what you mean by acc. either.

As I stated already, leave the starter wires!!! They ain't going anywhere anyway... Acc is the turning backwards of the key to listen to the radio!!! Hmmm, maybe your car doesn't have acc??? In any case, test the 14 pink for power on run and start! Hope this helps...
yeah, this does help and my car is radio delete. thx for your help, im really not good at wireing and i have never had to do this kinda stuff on cars, mostly just mechanical stuff and makeing it look pretty!!
