I guess that would be a"nose job" Lemans. I hope the seller knows there is no such thing as a 72 GTO convert.

The owner is Gerry Savoy. He runs a boneyard in Allardville, NB. Now, kinda makes you wonder how a boneyard owner ended up finding a '72 GTO convertible, doesn't it?

Actually it is more common than you think.  Another member of this board has 72 GTO (a real one - coupe) in the monarch yellow/green combo.

The car in this ad is very similar to mine.  I have 72 Lemans Sport convertible with T-41 (nose job) option which is what this car in the ad is.  Carl is correct, there is no such thing as a 72 GTO convertible.  This has been debated for the last couple of decades in the Pontiac community and no pretender has ever been able to come up with any paperwork to verify such a vehicle.  I wouldn't be surprised if this is just a 350 car as most Lemans' were.  Mine is a 455, 1 of 36.  Oh, and BTW, mine is Brittany Beige with a beige convertible roof and the exact same green interior.

For sure. No shame in driving a one-of-none as long as it's presented that way.

When he has it advertised for sale as a "1972 GTO convertible" with the "inquire for price" proviso, well, you can draw your own conclusions....

Hillar, some day you need to post pics of your other cars.

Colour combos like this are the epitome of that era. That's why I didn't change my interior
to black when I restored it.

A barely noticeable 5,807 GTOs were produced during 1972; 134 pillared coupes and 5,673 hardtops.   NO CONVERTIBLES  produced...

Big Ray was telling me the '73s were originally planned for '72. Gm had a styling cycle every two years so '72 was supposed to be the Collannade's debut. But a strike right around then crippled that idea making the '72s a leftover...?

There's talk of 1 1972 GTO convertible......mostly coming from 1972 Lemans owners who are selling there car with a GTO front clip. The problem is that you could option out your 1972 Lemans conv to look like a GTO,but it was still in the books as a Lemans.

That's a pretty negative post from you Carl, I know you copied it from some place but still it's not like you. Darryl is right though, the 72's were last minute carryovers.
The car we know as the '73 was intended to be the '72 if it were not for a UAW strike, so the 72/73 would have been a similar body followed by the 74/75, 76/77 which picked up the two year body style rule preceeded by the 66/67 and 68/69 styles. Can't imagine a convertible on the 73 body style although I know there are some out there.

Do you still have pictures of the proposed '72 Collannade's, Big Ray?

What exactly is "negative" about Carl's post Ray?  Quite frankly, I find it to be quite factual and appropriate.  People who go around advertising non-existent cars do the hobby a diservice and those of us who know should be dispelling these myths.

I have spoken with Jim Mattison of Pontiac Historic Services, Fred Simmonds of PMD, whose work originally documented the breakdown of vehicles and options at Pontiac, and others who worked at Pontiac at the time, basically everyone who would know and would have access to the records to prove the existence of such a car and it simply doesn't exist.

Anyone who claims otherwise either doesn't know what they are talking about, hasn't bothered to do the research to substantiate their claims, or worse, is attempting to commit fraud, plain and simple.

As mentioned, there have been stories and claims by people over the years who said they had a 72 GTO convertible.  I know, I have responded to several ads just like this over the last 20 years.  When asked to step up to the plate and show their paperwork, no one has ever stepped forward.  If Carl didn't say it emphatically enough, let me say it:

THERE ARE NO 1972 PONTIAC GTO CONVERTIBLES.

Oh my goodness, another "72 GTO convertible"!  They are all coming out of the woodwork now, they all must have been hiding in Canada all these years! rofl.gif
