Old car sightings

Is it cheating if I happen to be at work and see some old cars? Some people know I work in film production. Today I was on the set of "Copper" where they have a '73 Chevelle Deluxe coupe and a late '70s Trans Am (It was marked 5.0l on the shaker).

Didn't have my camera so no pictures...

Keep your camera with you at all times, look what I got this morning coming in from the cottage. Saw this Surfin Wagon at Bloomington Side Rd and Yonge St. north of Toronto. It was kool !

I also was following this nice flatbed down Bathurst Street just south of old Hwy #9 - Davis Drive.

Ya I was in 'yo hood this morning again.

I've driven right by it a few times and then had to double back. They did that all over with the old Hwy numbers when they downloaded responsibility to the municipalities. Yonge Street is Hwy #11 to me now and always but like you said some DA named it Country Road #4, I've driven past it and had to double back too no

the name change was one 'measure' to slow down traffic. if you aren't doing 100-105 km on that stretch between bathurst and the 400, you chance getting run over.
some moron figured if you removed 'hwy' from the name, people would slow down.

There are two many police around there bewteen the 400 and Bathurst where I turned down for my liking. I go in the right lane and set my cruise on 94 which is 14 over, not to attract too much attention BUT you are spot on Bob, I was getting blown by so the idea about slowing cars down didn't work.

Coming down the 400 in "Rush Hour" this morning just south of Barrie I jumped in on the end of a fast moving line in the left hand lane, when I glanced down at my speedo and I was going too fast and I was at the end of the line falling back. There was a time I would have glady done it but not anymore, NO THANKS, back to the centre lane and snapped on the cruise at 118.

I set the timer on my DIC and I made the rush hour trip from the cottage to my office at the Don Valley Parkway and Eglinton in 1 hour 54 minutes and 37 seconds. It was 158 km.

Ray, that is fast enough to qualify for "street racing".  You never want to make an admisssion like that on a public forum, you just never know who may be reading...wink

Good point Hillar, would that be admissable in court? I must have been mistaken, there is no way that under powered overweight gas guzzling Cadillac could exceed the speed limit.

The OPP had Suburbans out on the 401 near London last night pegging people. I saw one merge onto the highway as I was cruising by at 120. I slowed down and he hunkered on my back bumper for about 5km. This one was unmarked and it looked really cool -almost looked like it was lowered an inch or too! Dark blue, steelies and tinted windows. Looked really sinister. I could see the lights in the grille when he got behind me and the "cage" behind the driver.  About 10 minutes later another one had a Civic pulled over.

Well let's just hope someone at the OPP did not do a print screen of your original post.

I am not up to date on the rules of admissability of electronic evidence these days but my philosophy has always been it is better to be careful and safe than sorry.  Don't make their job any easier.

I'm sure it will come as no surprise to any of you that police in all jurisdictions across Canada where street racing or speeding is perceived to be a problem have been monitoring auto related discusssion boards.  In the Toronto area they initially concentrated on the "ricer sites".  The York and Durham regional forces were particularly known for this.  There was a site which was known as Toronto Street Racing.com (although the URL or any other sign in info made no reference to that name for obvious reasons) that operated quite successfully for years.  You could only get access if you personally knew one of the moderators, I mean they had to meet you physically before you could get the sign-in information.  It shut down a couple of years ago because of lack of traffic - there simply were not enough races being set up - and the owners didn't want to maintain the cost of keeping it going any longer - it was not a site you could go out and get legitimate sponsors for.wink  Also, this was the time the Durham police were really cracking down in general on any type of car gathering activity so basically they acheived their goal of drastically cutting down some of the heavy late night activity that was going on at that time, although we have no evidence that they ever managed to penetrate the site.

Personally I don't think a site like ours would be high on their radar screen, particularly if they spent any time reading our typical posts, but like I said, it is better to be safe than sorry.

Yeah, both the Toronto police and the OPP have those Suburban/Tahoes in and around Toronto as well.  They look lowered because they are, that's part of the police package plus they don't have 4WD.  Still, any car guy worth his salt can still pick them out given they are not like anything the public can actually buy.  I have heard reports though that the Peel force has been using vehicles that are exactly like something the public can buy, things like your standard Chrylser mini-van, now that is truly sneaky!

Not to add to anyone's paranoia (Hey, just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean there isn't somone out to get me!) but electronic monitoring by the NSA can pick up pretty much everything all the time, voice and computer, worldwide, and it is not too far a leap to get to the point where all that monitored information is shared with all govt agencies including state police under the guise of anti-terrorism or whatever. Once the data is available, of course it will be used in ways not originally intended.

Around here the unmarked squads include a late-model white Ford pickup truck (about the most common civilian vehicle on the road down here), a several-year-old dark green Cadillac, several Mustangs of the model type before 2005, plain-looking suburbans (not tricked out like yours), and others. Ya gotta be vigilant all the time on the roads (not that we aren't anyway, too many drivers who shouldn't be out there to look out for).

Dave

Ryan had a joint call with the OPP last week and the the Seargent showed up in the all black stealth markings Tahoe. As Hillar said they are two wheel drive so low, the one in the South Georgian Bay detachment has a light/push bar on the front grille and those black rims with small chrome dust cap. The detachements in cottage country seem to have a few Tahoes both marked and stealth. I had to pull over for one going full bore on a code 3 run just outside Wasga Beach, nothing like the sound of a 300 HP V8 going flatout as it speeds by you, I don't care what it's in.

opp294.jpg

Ryan also told me the Midland Police have a real killer stealth car which I have not seen it is a 5.3 V8 Buick Allure, all black with red and blue strobes in the grille and rear package tray, dark tint windows.

I noticed that there are more and more slick tops out there too and I even saw a Golden Helmet out on Hwy. 400 doing a traffic stop a few weeks back.

Oh ya, we better not forget the Stealth marked dark blue Pontiac Montana that does regular speed trap duty in and around Toronto Police Division #54.

As I mentioned before for some reason Ryan likes the 2008 Impala 3.9 best, the one he drives most is white with red and white strobes behind the rear view mirror, says it lights up like a lightning bolt when they hit it on those dark tree lines roads. Second to that is their Silverado.
