The value of what you bring home. The maximum duty free limit is $750 so after that you pay tax. It's not like they are going to take your stuff away, the government just wants their taxes.

So I guess what I'm askin should I list out all the stuff I have with#s for goin across and have the builder give me a receipt when I come back 2-3 months later stating he installed all supplied parts I brought over with me...I'm not buying anything over there just labour and Machine work...

youll want to contact canadian cutoms and get a form that indicates what exactly
is leaving the counrty iif s its of any significant value. the reason being they may
want to charge tax on the whole item when you are returning it into canada.
this way u have documents identifying what left the county and you need
to keep your reciepts and paperwork for what was done in the usa. I have
had things repaired in the usa and have only ever had to pay tax on the parts,
not sure if taxing labour is possible or just at their disgretion. id ask that when your
there.

the local sarnia customs # 519 383 1460

i dont believe they will do it in advance, but worth a try,

have all your serial #s ready, so they can record them and
give u a "green card" for your out going items, it will also be useful
to show US customs, when they ask what are u bringing in and why?

be prepared especially american side , they can be very serious,
a trip into secondary on there side is not unusal follwed by 1000 questions
is just part of things since 9/11. if lived at the border all my life and its
not nearly as easy as it once was, but its still happens, just takes more time
i guess we got spoiled when crossing between countries took 30 seconds.

i think the toll is about $3.oo each way

Looks like you're in London ON.  Not sure if London airport has a Canada Customs office, but if so you could deal with them.   This is very similar to when I used to register my camera / radar detector, etc with Canada Customs before leaving Canada to ensure they didn't think it was purchased out of country.  If I recall, you can only register items with a serial #.  You'll have to take it to Canada Customs so they can verify the items.

depending on the era of your block, it should have the sequential stamped on the block and can be registered.   (other items such as crank should have a casting date and you could likely use that as a serial #).   When returning, you can show your registration for the block, and the receipt for the machine work and pay the GST and applicable duty on the machining.

If this is getting too complicated, contact a border broker and they can do it all for you - most of them have offices on both sides of the border.
