An apology is owed.

My wife and I pulled up to Sheila's Burgers in Norwood, ON after a very pleasant drive up Highway 45 in the '67. As always, we were well into "The Zone", as we both wear ear-plugs due to the high noise level. *

Anyway, I shut it down, pulled out the plugs and walked over to the take-out window. A guy who was standing at the window, looking rather stunned, said, "I'm not really a car guy but, Holy Crap, that car is awesome. What is it?"

Truth is, I figured he was just jiving me, so I said, "Thanks. It's a Volkswagen.", and proceeded to place my order.

He walked around and around the car, and as he looked at the rally wheels, I heard him say to his wife, "Honey, it says Chevrolet Motor Division. Huh???".

I should have apologized and told him the make, model and year, but I couldn't believe that he didn't know. Maybe it was The Zone that messed up my thinking. So.............sorry my friend. I'll behave better next time.

* P.S. There is no better car to travel long distances in. It's impossible to carry on a conversation with your wife.

You know Bob you are forgiven. I think we all get jaded by the Cruise Night Lawyers and when someone actually pays us a compliment and doesn't know it's a bit shocking.  Not in the same leaugue as you but last week a Dad pulled up beside me with his son and shouted over, what year is your Bonneville ? I politely said it wa a 1973 LeMans, at least he got the make right.

back on the same note-Over the years I've had four mid year Corvettes, two 64's, a 65 and a 66, I was always amazed at how many people didn't know what they were.

and again I had a 61 Corvette-that summer I was complimented on my T-Bird I don't know how many times-once even at a cruise night-guess their not all car guys

It seems at least 80% of the population only really care about cars as far as them being transportation so this doesn't surprise me.

Ah, they've been making those Chevrolet wheel adaptors to fit VW Beetles for years

you are bang on-but isn't it amazing that the single product that drove and drives the entire North American economy has been lowered to the praticality of a fridge ! We were so passionate about cars-what happened ?

WHEN I HAD MY '66 BISCAYNE, MORE THAN ONE PERSON ASKED "WHAT YEAR IS YOUR CHEVELLE?". disbelief

What I found even worse when I had my 63 Sting Ray was the guys who obviously knew what it was and thought they knew more about my car then I did. They were always the same clowns with the lowball offers. One guy said " The split windows are worth less because you can't see out of them" This all happened when the car was not even up for sale. The hardest car in the world to sell is a Corvette, unless you like taking abuse from total a**holes.

So, to finish off my story, some friends tagged along in their '71 Cougar convertible. He needed gas, so we detoured off Highway 504 into Apsley (on Hwy 28) and totally dazzled the two teenagers running the gas pumps at the local Shell.

Neither of us waited for the young guys to fill 'er up. We pumped our own while they stood there like a couple of deer in the headlights. One guy couldn't believe how large the opening is to a midyear gas tank. confuse

The ladies let it be known that the gas station washrooms were unacceptable, so we found a well-kept public washroom down the street. The entrance is around back. We noticed a woman on a Harley was waiting in back, with an expectant look on her face. As I got out of the car, she said, "Geeze, I thought a whole pack of Harleys was coming 'round the building".

"Nope, just us", I replied.
biggrin

What a great weekend for cruising. And, I'll definitely return to Highway 504, a real twisty, turny drive through great country with very little traffic. When I go alone, I'll crank it up and enjoy the long sweeping curves.

a couple weeks ago at a cruise in i heard a guy tell his freind that my car was actually a 60, not a 59 and that i had the wrong old license plate and manual in the back window!!?? Dont ya think the owner of the car would at least know what year it is!! And i like the story of the girl thinking a whole bunch of harleys were there, i get that alot too, mostly they just yell and ask what i have in her, and then i get the funny look when i tell them its just a little 283.

I don't know. The OPP officer who flagged me down at the Ride-Check on Sunday afternoon (Highway 504) didn't seem too concerned when I pulled them out to hear his question......"Have any alcoholic beverages today, sir?".

"Absolutely not, Officer!"

"Thank you, sir. Nice car. Carry on."

Ear-plugs back in and....poof....we were gone.

I went thru a RIDE progam at the lake and the OPP had a Charger Hemi cruiser and I was driving the Charger Daytona. Both cops were asking a about mine, and me about theirs. They asked as an afterthought, " Oh, Have you been drinking?" But they had already been in my face checking out the interior so they knew I wasn't drinking
