I wish I could make it there tomorrow, I am at my parents place right now in Montreal and it is a 7 hour drive from here. I am reading this right, it cost 200 dollars to set up a little spot to sale some used parts you got, here in Winnipeg it only $10 to rent a spot and 3$ to get in ! No way you can make too much profit at the Barrie swapmeet. I wonder how much it is at the Abbotsford swapmeet nowadays.

Yes. It's the only practical way to go. I can't tell you how much stuff I've carried back from Barrie on airplanes since the mid-80s. Last few years I've gone in June so I could take in the Fleetwood Cruisein in London Ontario, but the plan this year was to do fall Barrie, which is the one I prefer between spring & fall. Oh well ... may go to fall Carlisle instead. Anybody have experience with it - I've only gone once in the summer?

A guy from Cornerbrook, Newfoundland was driving a Volkswagen Beetle in
Toronto, pulls up next to a guy in a Rolls Royce at a stop sign.
Their windows are open and he yells at the guy in the Rolls,
"Hey, you got a telephone in that Rolls ?"
The guy in the Rolls says, "Yes, of course I do."
"I gots one too... See?" the Newf says.
"Uh, huh, yes, that's very nice."
"You gots a fax machine?" asks the Newf.
"Why, actually, yes, I do."
"I does too! See? It's right here!" brags the guy from the Rock.
The light is just about to turn green and the guy in the Volkswagen says,
"So, does you have a double bed in back there?"
The guy in the Rolls replies, "NO! Do you?"
"Yep, gots me a double bed right in back here," the Newf replies.
The light turns and the man in the Volkswagen takes off.
Well, the guy in the Rolls is not about to be one-upped, so he immediately
goes to a customizing shop and orders them to put a double bed in back of
his car.
About two weeks later, the job is finally done. He picks up his car and
drives all over town looking for the Volkswagen beetle with the Newfoundland

Labrador plates. Finally, he finds it parked alongside the road, so he pulls

his Rolls up next to it.
The windows on the Volkswagen are all fogged up and he feels somewhat
awkward about it, but he gets out of his newly modified Rolls and taps on
the foggy window of the Volkswagen.
(It's ok, the joke is CLEAN)
The man in the Volkswagen finally opens the window a crack and peeks out.
The guy with the Rolls says, "Hey, remember me ?"
"Yeah, yeah, I remembers you,"replies  th e   Newfoundlander,
"What's up?" "Check this out...I got a double bed installed in my Rolls."
The Newf exclaims, "B'JEEZ B'Y, YOU GOTS ME OUT OF THE SHOWER TO TELLS ME
THAT?!"

Fall Carlisle just blows away Barrie, makes it look absolutely minor league in comparison.  Honestly John, if I was going to spend money on a plane ticket, Carlisle would win hands down.  The only thing you might only find at Barrie are  unique Canadian Pontiac parts, like the rally wheel centers, but everything else will be much more plentiful and much CHEAPER at Carlisle.  All the big national US vendors are there too.  I bought an LT-4 top end for my Camaro there for less than 1/3 of what the same parts would have cost me in Canada.  You also get the best deals on repo rally wheels, tires, the list goes on and on.  I know you are limited by what you can take on the plane but big stuff most vendors are most accomodating about boxing it up and shipping it.  I bought a complete set of bed mouldings for my 70 El Camino there one year, guy shipped it to me no problem and marked a very favourable value on the package as well.  Plus there are usually about 2,000 cars in the car corral.  Leave yourself at least two solid days to get through the place, and that is moving quickly and not dawdling much.

Yes, and that is why Barrie is gradually losing all it's vendors.  My long term spot partner finally gave up his spot after 20+ years.  When you add up the cost of the spot, renting a port a pottie (another $155), a camping spot (another $140) if you don't have room to camp on your vending spot, overflow parking if you can't get all your vehicles on your spot (another $20) and all the arbitrary rules and regulations (many of which do not make any sense at all), Haney controlling all the food vendors ( and hence their prices and no competition), no vehicle movement between 9-6, although there are constant violations of this rule ( I guess Haney's friends all have special dispensation and the rules don't apply to them ) the requirement of being on site from Thursday 9 am through Sunday at 5 pm and his constant bleating over the PA system about his costs going up (live with it Haney, it's your business, it's your risk and it's your problem) it's no wonder so many people are getting fed up and just throwing in the towel once and for all.  The number of overall vendors has been going down for years, and I'm sure the internet has something to do with that, but the biggest factor is instead of trying to address problems and concerns and perhaps do something like LOWER admission and vending spot charges to attract new customers, Haney just keeps jacking the prices up on those that are left to try and maintain his previous revenue.  To be honest, I haven't found anything really good at Barrie for the last couple of years (although I have managed to sell some stuff I wanted to get rid off), I now go more for the social aspect than anything else but I think those days will soon be coming to an end soon as well.

I have been helping out a friend by taking one of his 4 spots for a few years but it ends after this trip. Being kept in by a locked gate till 7 pm finished it for me. I sell more items at a meet that cost $25 . Its always good to see every one but this is too costly.

Barrie used to be a " must attend " but for all the reasons given already and a whole bunch more it is now " if I can find time ".

Thanks Hillar for the info on Carlisle. What you describe is what I saw when I was there in summer 1990; wondered if that held up over the years when by comparison Barrie has declined so much.

I agree with everything you've said about it. I haven't seen a good car corral there since the mid 90s, and the quality and availability of parts has fallen way off. Last time I was therein June 08 I did get two NOS wheel moldings for my 68 Caprice and the same guy had a gauge pckg for a 67 Impala. Plus I got two mirrors for my 63 Catalin. But there wasn't much there - nowhere near the selection of parts I used to see there not so long ago. And lots of non-car junk.

I'm just going to get my wheels-its either 2 hours to London/Ingersoll or 2 1/2 to Barrie and look at a few things-

was always disappointed at where they moved the car corral too, it was nice walking in the maingate seeing cars.

on call this weekend, can't make it.
haven't been for a couple years and about 5 years before that. used to go every year, spring and fall.
realized why i hadn't bothered for those 5 years, last time i was there....way too much other totally non related crap, and just alot of plain junk. rarely found anything i needed.
you summed it up pretty good hillar. haney is a greedy furious.

it would be great if someone started up another sept. swap meet in the area and killed off haney's money fields.
