There were a few made, but not on the production line. They were shipped out somewhere. They made a few Z-28's as well.

ASC, American Sunroof Company did the work I believe. Car's are often referred to as She's. In this case She would have looked better if she kept her top on, can't say that very often!

There are two of these here in St. John's - both 80 or 81 Z28 Camaros. I see one of them frequently in the summer.

They built them here in toronto also. They made a bunch of camaros - I have seen at least a dozen different ones over the years, but I have never seen a TA before.

This is an excellent example of an un-restored 1981 Pontiac Trans Am that has survived the test of time and is in mint condition.  The current owner purchased this automobile in December 1983.  At that time it had 12,000 miles on the vehicle.  It currently has 30,000 miles on it, which the owner believes are the actual miles.  This rust free vehicle has always been stored inside.  It spent eight years in California, nine years in South Texas and the most recent eight years in Florida.

This is an excellent running automobile.  It has had on repaint.  The hood bird and other decals are in excellent shape.  The engine runs smooth.  The manually operated top operates smoothly.  This is a beautiful automobile whether the top is up or down.  It is fully power optioned including air condition.  It is equipped with the original 4.9 liter engine and automatic transmission.  This vehicle has never been raced or abused.  Drive it with confidence anywhere.

What would you race a 301 against? A wheelbarrow? They were not performers

I read about them before but that is the first ones I have seen.

I think the roof line was ruined with the convertable top.

I had a 301/auto firebird for all of a week. They are not kidding when they say bring a lunch for the 0-60.

Comparable Performance data from web search: You be the Judge. It's not like a 400 in the '79 was much better.

Road
& Track 4/80 1980 Turbo Trans Am 15.94 .... Along with a 10.25:1 compression ratio, yielded 0-60 in 7.9 ...

With a 220 horsepower 6.6 litre V8 this 1979 10th Anniversary Pontiac Trans Am hit a 0-60 time of just over 7 seconds and a 1/4 mile ET of under 16 seconds

Is the 7.9 minutes or seconds?

Agreed, all the appeal is with the top down on those.

Just yanking your chain Ray. I like those cars but I was at a Pontiac dealer in those years and they were sadly underpowered compared to the 400/455 cars.

Don't get me wrong, if I had a large car collection with money being no object there would be one of those in the group.

I hear you Carl. I have no loyalty to the Firebirds either way, just wanted to show that in reality it was the 1979 400 Trans Am that was a dog, not the 301. I think most people on Board would automatically expect the 400 to blow away the 301, but it really did not.

Ray, have you ever driven a late 70's 400 powered Firebird?  They still had tons of torque down low and would blow ANY 301 into the weeds.  Turbo T/A - 7.9 seconds vs. 400 - 7 seconds, how can you say the 400 was the dog?   A tenth is recognized as being a car length which means in the sprint to 60 the 400 would be almost 10 car lengths ahead.  The 301s were all slugs, turbos or not.
