general information for 1951 Pontiac Chieftain Deluxe

Hi everyone,

I own a 1951 Pontiac Chieftain notchback deluxe 4 door sedan with a flat head straight 8 (Pontiac eight) motor with Hydramatic transmission.  I am looking for parts and am having a hard time locating them.  Can anyone help me with the following:
-light switch
-neutralizer switch for back-up light
-radiator cap, complete radiator would be even better
-water temp gage
-hood spring
-original interior material

Does anyone else own a similar car?  I know it was built in Oshawa, color is Palametto green.  Following is the car info:
-model 27-69D
-Serial #1276902585
-engine P10387
-trim 445
-body serial 552
-paint 155

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

The identification plate says made in Oshawa & the Canadian sales brochure I have says that the car was available in Canada. I am 100% shure this is a Canadian car.

Yes.
Its confusing but , this is how I understand it. They did sell US chassis cars here in Canada in the higher Pontiac models. The 2500, 2700 cars are the same as the US cars. but built here in Canada, or shipped here and taged with GM of Canada tags. Along with the option of the strait 8 under the hood. Those are the Chieftan, and StarChief.
Pontiac's cheaper Canadian line Was the 2000 and 2200 Models.
My friend owns one of those Larger chassis cars Its a 51 Chieftan Deluxe model 2569.
Maybe I should be saying large chassis models instead of US chassis car. Its still a Canadian built car but a Higher model that is the same as the larger brother from the US. One way to tell from the larger chassis cars is the tail lights. Round ones for the 2500 and 2700 models. and squarish for the 2000,2200 cars.
Now saying all this I am still in no way an expert in all this, theer is still so many little details that I donn't know yet and am still on the path of learning. I am am proven wrong then, I'm wrong and its chalked up to a Nubie learning experiance.
Hope this clears things up.

Here is a pic of the 1951 model 2569D
Canadian cowl tag..note the round tail lights

So if you do have one of those larger wheel base cars. Enjoy it, I have not seen very many around. I have not yet seen one with the factory 268 strait 8 in one either. So if you have pic we would all love to see it. Thanks.

Thanks alot for the information, this comfirms what my retire friend who had a body shop for 30 years says. "this car was most likely build in the States".
I bought this car from Vernon B.C. It has 92000 original miles, mechanic is in good chape . I will send some pictures today.

Oh Im not saying that the car is not Canadian, it is if it shows that on the cowl tag, plus the fact that you have a Canadian brochure (rare) for it too. Its that its a Canadian brother to the US cars here in Canada. Which to me seems rarer? I could be wrong in all this but if there is others with a higher knowledge than what I have for sure chime in.

As for parts your frame, body are all Pontiac. You should have an open differential, not a torque tube diff. Also if they are still on the car a cover over both back leaf springs that require lube. Your suspension is also all Pontiac, not Ch**y. But some basic electrical and mechanical parts will interchange, but allot more if you had a 2000, or 2200 model.

Yes both leaf springs are covered as you indicated.  As for the differential, I will have to check.

Wow! Thanks for sharing that. I have never seen that brochure. Take note of the first Chieftain with the longer fender between the wheel to the front door. Those must be the 2500/2700 cars. Thanks!

So three lines of Pontiac's The Fleetleader 2000/2200, then Chieftain 2500 and then assuming the next in order would be the Streamliner 2700. I'm not sure where the Catalina would be under what series? Guessing under either 2200, or 2500.

Attached are 2 spec sheets I found in the manuals I had.   You will see which vehicle is in what series.

The Catalina started in 1950 and falls under the 25 and 27 series.

I believe the 25 series would be a 6 cylinder and the 27 series would be an 8 cylinder.

I guess that your friend has a Streamliner six according to my spec sheet. I have notice that he does not have a set of fender skirt. Maybe this was an option for the Streamliner! I also notice that the sun visor on your friend car  is not he correct one for the 49 to 54. I have an accessory book # 212 edition of 1951 that shows all the available GMC accessories. I will scan & post when I have time. Do you have some pictures of the interior of your friend car you could post. I would like to compare with mine. Just wondering if it has flashers or if this was also an option!
Cheers Pierre

My friend's car is a Chieftan Deluxe 6 2569D
Fender skirts was an option that was not added. The sunvisor is made by Fulton an after market piece. And yes I have some inside shots. and yes it has flashers added at the dealership at time of purchase when new.

I think the Streamliner was only a two door model in 51.
