Registering and insuring a classic?

What are the rules when registering a 42 year old car? It's been a while since I did a old one.

I know I need proof of insurance.
The sellers package.
A current certification.

Is the amount on the bill of sale the pst taxable amount, or does one need an actual appraisal?

As far as insurance, I've read here that Lant or Siver Wheels is a good bet... but I've also heard that you need to qualify to be insured by these folks. How so?

Thanks, Mark

mark,
you need TWO appraisals, 1 for taxes and the other for insurance.
gov'tment won't accept a written bill of sale for an older car from a private seller.

i'm with lant, no qualifying, just a proper photo and description appraisal.

ken...? wink

If you have a buddy at a new car dealership you can get a sales manager to do the appraisal. They typically don't charge you for it. Some classic car appraisers are also qualified to do the appraisal for the govt.

Just a proviso here. We posted some threads already this week. I actaully talked to Lant and got it from the horse's mouth. He is being more discriminating on what he writes new buisness for. In your case Mark your car is clearly a Collectible vehicle and that is what he wants. I called to help out the guy selling that cherry '66 Laurentian because Cruise Night Lawyers were saying he won't take 4 dr cars.

I had my Lemans done as soon as I brought it home, because it was a roller ond a mess!!! It had to be done at a licensed facility that sells vehicles Whatever it was appraised you paid the taxes for. Cost me $30 i believe. Best to get it done before the car looks pristine to save you $, unless you KNOW someone.

Lant as all other Classic car insurers have an application form, you need a full time vehicle insured with another company, ten years driving experience, payment, insurance appraisal with pictures by an accepted appraiser (they'll recommend someone in your area)

RST appraisals are required by the MTO to transfer anything over twenty years of age or with no value on the green used vehicle information package (seller's package). The original memo in october 2004 stated unfit transfers don't require an appraisal only fit transfers-but all the guys who call me to cheat on tax I send them to the Welland office on Lincoln street for some reason they still transfer unfit with no appraisal. An RST appraisal is written on a green government form-the appraiser requires a Minister of Finance number (MF followed by six numerical digits).

you require

a bill of sale

used vehicle info package (bill of sale is the last page)

driver's license

RST appraisal to transfer unfit (unless in welland)

going fit ?

you need plates

insurance policy number

safety standards certificate

rst appraisal

used vehicle package

tax is paid on the appraisal or receipt which ever is higher

typically I charge $125 plus GST for insurance appraisals (add fuel sometimes outside the area)

$40 mobile service for the RST appraisals $20 in my driveway-dealers generally charge $25 but you bring it to them

hope this helps somewhat

good luck-nice car !
