Factory Tach for 65 and 66

Hi guys I have one of these for my 66 Grande and I was under the impression that you could only get these on cars with standards.  Mine is an powerglide and didn't orignally come with one although the owner had an kneeknocker dealer installed one put in  later, from what I can figure. That's the one I'm trying to sell now. Can anybody tell me if my impression (standards only)is true?

Also mine has three wires only coming out of it with no terminals for more.  The ground is obvious as it's black and still has the sheet metal screw marks on the terminal.  One is gray with no end and one is brown with no end.  I'm assuming the gray is ignition power and the brown is coil on the negative, but I'm not sure. Also how did they work the light in that installation?  I don't see a hookup for that anywhere.

Any wise words would be appreciated.

I'll add a picture tomorrow

Gray is for the light.

Brown goes to the (-) side of the ignition coil.

I forgot to take a picture last night but I will try to get it posted as soon as I can.  They are a pretty substantial looking unit with a round face and an adjustable redline that bolts onto the flat part of the dash in the far upper left corner. (just left of the speedo.)

Vince Jr was over tonight from Foam Lake(1400 kms to pick up the 67 GP!) and now I see why the gray wire is for lights.  We pulled off  the foil light covers so now I see where they go in. Thanks for the advice Carl and I will post an picture although I can't help you find one, rebelrouser  ( I could sell you my ridicuously expensive kneeknocker.)

My 66 4 speed car with transistor ignition had that factory tach. I was always scared it would puke because I realized how rare it was. It worked flawlessly the 9 or so years I drove that car. I think that car was one of the most functional factory tachs I've ever seen. Big face, great location, 270 degree sweep, it was a well planned option.

No problem Carl Appreciate the extra shots.

Here are a couple of ours.  Mine and my bros in the 409 car.  I agree, for a factory tach they were quite well placed and well engineered.  Now I just have to get mine working.

I notice on the back of mine is a stamping that says 8cyl.  I assume then that you cousl order these with the 6 as well.  Now that would be a rare piece!

I imagine that these would show up on ebay once in a while as they would be the same as American full size Pontiac tachs right?

You want to sell the one in the picture?  Mine has a dent in the chrome and I'm looking to upgrade.  I don't need the pot,so it's perfect!

Yeah Carl you had me kind of scratching my bald old head. I was trying to visualize what you could possibly be talking about.  You uber gurus have us relative punks at you mercy (ie we believe everything you say) so you have have to  use your powers carefully.

I hope you did enjoy the meds!

Hey back to the main thread, I just noticed that there are two separate sales on ebay right now for one of these.  The guy is selling the tach and the housing in two separate sales.  Might be handy for rebelrouser to know.

Here is a link to both:

http://cgi.ebay.ca/63-63-Pontiac-8-000-RPM-Tach-Bonneville-Tachometer-NICE_W0QQitemZ250507372532QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3a536727f4&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

http://cgi.ebay.ca/62-63-Pontiac-Tach-Housing-Tachometer-Chrome-Dash-Mount_W0QQitemZ250507376255QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item3a5367367f&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

It'll be interesting to see what they go for.

Hmm, he has his year wrong there. The 63 and 64 tach has a short sweep, not 270 degree like the 65 and 66 tach pictured.

I didn't think there were any.  I've seen factory installations from both years and I can't think of any difference.

(I was planning on keeping mine for my 66 Grande.)

I thought the same but I'm old enough that I finally understand that I actually DON'T know it all after all......

Haven't you packed up and headed this way with that air conditioned 396 car yet? I thought you'd be here by now with title in hand and a one way train ticket so you could get back home.....

Since I am unsure of this topic, I will show as we have all seen, an original '65 409 4-speed with tach............

100_4649.jpg

100_4654.jpg

100_4652.jpg

There is no tach in the console of this one but just a clock. Tach is on the dash. Is it a clock you are after??
