A young friend of mine, from Wisconsin (plenty close to Canada, eh?), has been there for quite a few years, please excuse the non-Pontiac reference but his family has some Stage I GS Buicks, let's face it they were surprisingly fast back then, having the highest torque rating of any GM car, and he says that he always had a LOT of fun there, it is real old-school racing, just enough rules to make it competitive (editorial comment: when I see delay boxes and throttle stops and dogging off the line and nose drops at the end, it makes me want to puke, how can they even call that racing?) and although he confesses his car does not leave quite like this, some credit has to be given to our brethren the Buick owners (remember the pecking order was C-P-O-B-C):

Thanks for posting these pics. I didn't see any video of these two cars but I loved the stills of the green 64 Catalina running against the white 63 Chev Impala (presumably a 409) as I have both of these cars.

I made this post in another thread, thought it would be appropriate to put it here too.

If you really want to experience what these cars for meant for, you have to go to one of various muscle car drag races.  My favourite is the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race held in Michigan each year (I've got to get around to posting some pics from that) but there are others as well such as F.A.S.T. races and the race at Martin, Michigan each spring.  I want to emphasize that many of these cars are pristine, "museum quality" restorations and that the owners have no problem flogging the living daylights out of them and using them for what they were meant for!

Oh, what the heck, here are a couple of pics from this year:

Hillar,
Are you running your Laurentian next year? Is the swap to an LS5 allowed?

Isn't the only difference in the two engines the cam ?

RULE BOOK: " Camshaft: The camshaft must be correct for the model, year, and horsepower claimed for duration, lift, and type of lifter (hydraulic or solid). No roller cams allowed. Engines must be able to produce 16.0 inches of vacuum at 1200 rpm. However, certain factory-produced engines were not able to generate 16.0 inches of vacuum in showroom condition, so those cars will be given a variance to the rule."

Hillar knows the rules best but sounds like it would be OK.

You can run any engine that was available in that model in that year so yes, that is why it says what it does in my sig.wink  Believe it or not, you can also run any gears that were available from the factory that year as an option, even though your vehicle may have not been originally equipped with those gears.  That is decision I am wrestling with now.

Actually there were more differences than just the cam, Clint is the expert on what else was different.  Dan Jensen, one of the organizers, basically told me which cam to order in order to get the most HP possible and yet still meet the rules.wink

A few more pics.  Pete Simpson was there with his COPO Nova, nice to see him competing after his rather unfortunate incident earlier this year.

The Mid Michigan Motorplex was our home track in the 70's and into the 80's.  Originally, the venue was known as Central Michigan Dragway.  It is located about 5 miles south of Edmore in the middle of Corn and Potato Country.  Edmore is home of the Potato Festival.
Last time I traveled through Edmore, I think I counted 3 motels with a total of maybe 60-80 rooms.  Most of the years we raced there, there were no accommodations and everyone camped at the track during weekend events.  Anyway, they now have a McDonalds and a Burger King, so welcome to big city life.  Stanton is a town south of the track and I'm not familiar with it at all.
If you are looking to attend the Pure Muscle Car Event, you might try a search for accomodations in Edmore as an alternative to Stanton.
Anyone traveling from Ontario would want to cross the border at Sarnia and take I-69 west to probably the M-66 north exit to Ionia.
Just wanted to give you a heads up, do not waste your time looking for any big city ammenities if attending the Muscle Car Drags in Mid-Michigan.
FYI, the promoters of this event are some of the most well known Pontiac restorers, collectors and racers outside of the Detroit area.
