In '80?? Thought the last for the muncie was in '75-6 sometime?? Was the Saginaw still used? I know in an '82 I worked on, it had a small output Warner in it.
 Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

Even in 77 they were all BW ST10's , I thought the Muncie was done after 72 ??The 1980's had a 3.42 first gear. Some had a cast case some were aluminum. The Standard Camaros came with the Saginaw, only the Z cars had the BW.  Correct me if I'm wrong, is there an option code ?? I waited a year from order date for my 4spd 1980 Z28 !!

Well guys, the Muncie stopped in roughly '75 as the BWT-10 was revamped from the '60's to become BW ST-10 to replace the Muncie. Most people get confused 'cause they both have identical cases except for the Muncie has 7 side cover bolts and the ST-10has 9.The Muncie's were only available as an Aluminum case as the BW ST-10 had Cast and Aluminum cases. The Muncie only had 3 gear ratio's available while the ST-10had close to 10-11 ratio's from 2:43 to 3:42 first gears depending on the application.I have had 10 ST-10's with various ratio's-cast and aluminum cases. My brother had a very low mileage(34k)'76 SE TransAm 4 spd(ST-10) w/ a 2:43 first gear and I myself have had a low production '81 Z-28 350 4spd T-roof car loaded w/ a ST-10 3:42 cast case which is now in my 'Chief. If my research is correct, the last Muncie could've gone into a SD 455 car in '74.I'm not saying I know it all but I do have alot information regarding this issue as I am what you could say a 4 spd freak!!! "Real cars have 3 pedals"!!

I believe you are correct-I had a 77 SE 400 4-speed trans Am, RPO M21 came up but it was a Borg Warner

I think that's why lots of people are confused. The M21 option code continued after the Muncie stopped in 74 (according to what I've read)

Most things I've read say the transition took place during the 74 model year.

If I'm right,the M21 code was the 4spd option code and not necessary the trans type code.I think thats where alot of people get confused and assume what they read is what they get.Remember what they say about assuming......

In the early days it meant 4 speed, close ratio.

I'm not sure if it defined ratio once it applied to the Borg Warner trans though.

regardless of the tranny debate, no one has a kid, or know's someone who wants a 2nd gen camaro? It's clean, with no real rust repair required.

I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to make it a debate. I happen to be a bit of a trivia fanatic!

IIRC,

The build codes should show MM4 for manual trans and M21 for the stronger ST10 trans. It should be a 3.42 "z" gearset, but depending on the build date it could be the aluminum or cast iron case. Later built cars had the cast iron case.
