Beautiful day for a ride in the old car to play hockey in the morning and then put my kids to work and have them lift an engine with me. Fun family day.
Bought a new, more HD Lisle brand damper puller, tightened it right up...no go. Added a bit of heat to the damper flange and using the "whack the bolt" method it finally relented. That method does actually work!
Took the cam and rotating assembly out. Dropped a piston breaking it's skirt. Not to worry, I have a new set of Sealed power stock pistons to use. 130 dollars cdn for a weight matched set, plus 40 for rings. This isn't like doing the 496!
So now I'm working to get all the plugs out. Will do a basic cleaning, then a 320 flex hone on the cylinders...then back to the wash for a good soap and water scrubbing and blow out of the bores and all the passages. I have a Moroso block cleaning long brush kit, that covers all the internal passage sizes, and it works well. Can never be too clean, I think it's a real key to a good build.
This thing is nasty dirty...
Some parts acquired this past weekend on a trip To Summit... Decided to spruce it up with a new Summit branded HFT cam. 214/221 @ .50, .46/.46 lift, 112. (P# SUM-1103).
I like Summit branded parts, they are usually popular brand name parts with their own label, and are of good quality. It's a good way to save a little on a budget build,

nice look there cdnport took my trany pan off ,drained the fluid looked pretty red and clean for sitting for 20 plus yrs ..put new gasket on pan ..next front and rear seals...this weekend taking a break from my job and going to put my heads together ,valves,seals ect..fun stuff
Seems transmissions can sit for a real long time and look great when opened up. I think the fluid actually has a anti corrosion component in it. Not like motor oil, the fluid seems to stay, well, fluid over time.
I look forward to having a peek at my PG when the time comes to add the 327.

a set of 60's on the back on those rims would make things look cool from the back..I have 50's x 15's on the back of my 64 for now and sure looks cool..yep they rub at the lower front of the wheel wells at times but looks good prob going with 60's on back when motor is done
Go narrower and taller, mine are a 28 inch X 8 inch wide and dont rub.

The truck tailgate is a nice height for this job. My workbenches are too high to be able to have good leverage when I clamp down the spring compressor.
You can sure spend big dollar refurbishing BB heads Carl. I priced having it done. It was actually close to the same cost to buy the much better flowing aluminum Brodix.
But the look would certainly be lost with aluminum. Maybe you'll get lucky and not have to do too much to them. Here's hoping for you.

I debated a long time which direction to take, but yes, originality won out.
I don't think it will cost a huge pile of money to have them in premium condition. I get a great deal on parts at work, so it will be a bit of a cost to get guide(s) replaced but not much else.

The 409 guys recommend against hardened seats, issues with going into the water. I would look at hardened seats for a drag car or a tow vehicle. I havent heard of anyone with any issues who did not do hardened seats.
For aftermarket aluminium heads, some grind the mnfg name off and paint them orange.

First front wheel drive clutch I`ve done...what a pain. Don`t know how some of you do it for a living! Also working on an ICBC right off. Boy it would be nice to have a hoist!!! Santa,Santa,Santa...hope hes listening!
Me too on the garage,darn GF would never see me other than feeding me something to eat..might be a good thing for her ? haha and yes a hoist would sure make things better for this old back of mine putting my heads together this weekend on the kichen table..yep she puts up with alot
just got my heads together and put them out in the cold garage,,,You know I can spend money on some of the stupid things I THINK I can use for my car but do ya think instead of NOT spending a extra 20 bucks on a good spring compressor I insist on getting the cheapest one I could find...and yep made things alot tougher than it needed to be...Old but not wize have a great day all !
