Because of the "lovable nature" of folk from Newfoundland, some mainlanders find it "cute" to refer to strange things as "Newfie"        Actually my wife's parents, were from Newfoundland, and  she is a Blondedisbelief    double wammie for mehmm  lol   Sorry, there is no excuse to refer to other parts of Canada in a joking manner  I did not make the Newfie reference  but I will appoligize for them... lol   C2

Have you considered an infrared heater? I have a Schwank Infrared 20 footer in my garage and I love it. It's efficient and quiet. Plus the pilot is isolated from inside the garage just in case you decide to do some painting..

Hey Bob....Love the avatar!

Your looking at a "off shore" made product. I believe they are assembled in China. I don't know if the parts for it are readily available for it. If anything goes wrong with it, there are parts that can be used to retro fit to get it going again (but at what cost?). You would be better off to buy one with a proper warranty from a local heating/refrigeration business. A proper installation to code (separate gas shut off to the unit, "B" vent for discharge, thermostat, copper gas line etc...) could run you up to $2000+. And your house insurance will go up (if you notify them) and tell them your garage is now heated. My insurance went up an additional $50 when I told my insurane broker. Both Todd and Steve's units are great heaters. It just depends on what you need and how much you are willing to spend.

I have a lennox heater similar to the one you are using along with an airtight woodstove to heat a 36x40 shop. A friend who is a journeyman in HVAC informed me this type of heater would not pass an inspection in Ontario due to the fact the pilot light has an open flame. I have been using the heater for over 20 years and have not had a problem with it but if I was going to purchase a new heater it would be the radiant tube style heater. I have this type in my house garage 24x24 and it has worked excellent for appx 10 years. The board fried in this unit this week and it cost me $365 for the board and one hour service time to get it repaired. I figure $40 a year for maintance on a heating system is resonable. I like the tube style because it is quiet and when we park two vehicles in the garage in the winter in minus 30 temperatures the vehicles and floor are dry in the morning with the heater set on a low setting.

I just read this again.... I'm sorry if I offended you with the Newfie crack...I will call it Crappy Tire from now on.  Thanks, Carl, for catching this first

Thanks for all the feedback.

Anyone have photos of the radiant tube installed in their garage? It sounds like it might be the way to go.

Here's some photos of my heater:

Intake:

Exhaust (note: keep exhaust far away from motion sensing lights! The exhaust will turn your light on!)

I'm a big fan of foam insulation. My heater comes on very infrequent during the winter. When it does come on it runs for about 10 minutes.

Excellent, Todd. Is that the 20 foot unit? Did you work with a Schwank dealer or buy the stuff and have a local HVAC guy install it?

That's a 20 footer. I worked with a dealer who installed it. He wasn't cheap but his work is very good. It looks like a pretty straightforward install so any competent hvac guy could do it (or you could do it yourself and have it inspected). Schwank also recommends an infrared thermostat which is more accurate however I've never had a problem with my standard unit. Infra red is nice as it heats objects instead of the air.

In my attached garage I have a huge cast iron  radiator taken from an old house. Works great - you can work there in shirt sleeves all winter. In the detached garage, I use two 5000 watt/240 volt commercial warehouse  heaters. More than enough for the 24' by 32' space.

I have a lennox 75,000 BTU in my garage similar to the one you have pictured.  Its OK but man is it noisy!  It has a blower driven chimney so when the burner is on it combines to make this whoooing sound.

i never expected that when I signed up for it.

I'd go with radiant if I did it again.

A BUDDY PUT 2 OF THESE IN HIS SHOP A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. HAD NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THEM. THERE IS A ELECTRONIC BOARD IN THEM THAT KEEPS DYING. HE DID GET REPLACEMENT BOARDS AT NO COST BUT WHAT A HASSLE. SEEMS HE WAS NOT THE ONLY ONE HAVING PROBLEMS. THEY MAY HAVE FIXED THE PROBLEM BY NOW. HE SOLD HIS PROPERTY, SO I DON'T KNOW IF THE PROBLEM WAS EVER SOLVED OR CORRECTED.blankstare

This is an example of why I asked the question. Thank you all for the good advice.

I'll be discussing the Schwank design with a local HVAC guy this week. smile
