Question re 66 beaumont 327, alternator...

I've seen a number of small block Beaumont's that have their alternator mounted on the front of the bracket.  As per the attached picture you can see that mine is mounted on the back of the bracket.  Is this correct?  The reason I ask is that it does look like it pulls the belt towards the block slightly more that you would think it should.  (Also might be worth mentioning that the alternator hole is threaded which might lead one to believe that the current setup is correct?...)
Thx in advance for any thoughts.

Here's a second picture which I think illustrates what I mean by "pulling it back towards the block"...

I would say the picture is correct. They are always threaded on the old ones, are they not?

If they're always threaded on the old ones, then would I be correct in saying that the threading therefore has no impact on whether it goes on the front or the rear (as many do appear on the front)?...

I am used to the bolt going in from the front, so if they are threaded then the bracket should always be in front of the alternator I would say. I have certainly dismantled my share of 60's V8s and I'm sure the bolt always was in from the front, at least on unmolested originals.

Looking at your new picture I am thinking that if the bracket was moved it would make your belt move too forward at the alternator end wouldn't it?

Thx for the feedback Carl.  (I should have also taken a picture of the installed reverse lights smile)
Attached is a feature car link which shows an example of the alternator mounted on the front  It too is a 327, but I can't say if it's the same alternator or not.  (Would the rag top have a different alternator maybe?)....

Well, I'll be.....

I guess I have pulled apart too many B bodys. It seems to me they have a different bracket. As a matter of fact, I'm sure they do. They have a flat strap that is slotted for adjustment. I'm going to see if I can scare up a shot of one.

I was thinking more like this one---

Well, I'll be jiggered. I think all these gray hairs are catching up with me. I looked at a whack of pictures and you are right. The bracket should go on the back.

As long as I've owned the car it's been mounted the way that it is.  Having just replaced the rad and water pump though, I'm paying it some long overdue attention which has brought up this question.
In your opinion, should I give it a shot moving it to the front Carl?

I would try it Geoff.

It will only take a couple of minutes to try it the other way. You'll see right away if that makes it worse or better.

And the more I look, the confused-er I get!!!

I just spent a bunch of time looking at engine pics on ebay cars. It appears maybe 64 and down are the other way (on the front), 65 and up are on the back. Not certain though, I seem to find both ways, and also lots of non original cars so who's to say?

I could look at the assembly manual I have on microfiche for you Beaumont now that I think about it. If you try and it's still unclear, let me know and I will look at that.

I've gone through my books and there are a few pictures, but none of them specify anything.  I'm thinking that if some were intentionally mounted on the front, they might have a shorter neck for the pulley than those mounted on the rear?  And if so, does it make sense that the rag may have come with a larger alternator?  (Clearly I'm graspinghmm)

I don't think the rags where different. They may have gone from 37 to 42 amp at best. The 61 amp (I think it was 61 or 62) was the biggest but in 67 at least it was the same bracket. I had a car with a/c that had one of those.

Well, I guess it's time to go to my "car room" and look at the fiche. Back in a bit...

I just looked at the fiche. The picture posted above by 67BBSD is correct. The bracket is on the back side of the threaded portion of the alternator. The bolt goes in from the back.

Son of a gun.  20+ years she's been like this.  You'd think it would have been tough on the belt or pump?  I'll move it the first free evening that I get this week, and see how things line up.

Thank you very much both very much.  (Sounds like quite the "library" you have there Carl. eyepopping.gif)

Ohhhhhhhh, I've been collecting for a while...........................

It helped having a friend at the GM zone office in Winnipeg. I accumulated a lot of old parts books and material from there sometimes when it was headed for the dumpster.

Plus I've bought up stuff from a number of dealerships that have closed.

Haha, no problem. I love doing research like that, especially Sunday nights. Other nights I feel guilty because I should be working on something rather than looking up what amounts to be useless trivia in many cases.

At least this one was practical, it actually had a purpose!

not so quick-I just spoke with Wayne-he has a 66 Malibu SS 327 4-speed, he's the original owner-always done his own mechanical-the car has 40,000 miles-the alternator is behind the bracket.

Maybe its a 327 thing ???
