Thanks Carl,

You always seem to have a poignant story to help clarify the meaning of things.   Thank you for the story about the veteran on the back of the $10 bill.   I will never look one again in the same way.

Learned something new on this rememberance day that I can't wait to tell my wife.
She always listens to the local rock station on remembrance day and cries during the reading of "in Flanders Fields" then the minute of silence.

One of the reasons I married that women, she understands what's important in life "Lest we forget".

This is all good stuff to keeping us from forgetting about or veterans. It reminds me of Terry Kelly's song about the veterans. It has to be one of the best reminders. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kX_3y3u5Uo

I give the veterans (especially the WWII vets) my utmost respect. My parents lived in occupied Holland through the war. Were they ever glad to see the Canadian liberators! Many died of starvation and it was a cold winter as well. I enjoy engaging these old veterans in conversation, very fascinating.

We stopped in Ortona this year on our big Europe trip.  The Canadian graveyard is huge, beautifically kept up and overlooks the Adriatic.    We signed the register on behalf of my Mothers cousin who got shot around Christmas (but survived). Really got to me especially with the graves of all races and religions in the same place.

Makes you feel kind of unworthy.

I noticed that this has been "bumped"  I have to admit i have no idea what that means even after two years on this site.  Could somebody tell me what that is and please try not to let me know how dumb I am?

Hey Carl i just originally read the main heading of this thread so figured anything related was fair game.  I hadn't seen yours. I still don't know what "bumping" is.

As time progresses, the thread gets pushed farther and farther down the list as more things are written on the forum.

A "bump" is when someone makes a new post on the thread. That "bumps" it back to the top.  When someone writes "TTT", it is just the same thing. It bumps it back to the top of the list again.

Clear as mud?

Well shut my mouth and call me mumbles!
So everytime you reply to a post you bump it? is that all?  I though it was some kind of forum equivalent of stuffing some body in a locker or something dire like that.

rofl.gif Nope, it bumps it to the top every time you add to it and some guys just enter "bump" so that it goes back TTT (to the top)

Simple, even for us old guys!

My dad was a WWII vet. He trained in New Brunswick and did 3 tours in Europe. Active at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, he flew in more of those planes than most pilots. Every year he would be featured on CHCH TV in Hamilton as a surviving vet. Well 1 month ago we lost him suddenly. At age 88 I really cant complain, but still I miss him dearly. A product of one of the most amazing generations, he was still working for the Board Of Negotiations (he had a mind like a steel trap right to the end). Last weekend we visited mom. My 17 year old daughter was very close to dad (he was a great guy) and she was given his WWII dog tags, upon which she immediately broke down and cried. Now she wears them every day. Because of dad she has a deep interest in WWII history. When people talk about the Montreal Massacre, my mom puts things in perspective and brings out a scrap book with tons of o-bits of classmates that went to war and never returned. To quote my dad, "you dont even know you are alive!" Godspeed dad, and to all the vets who paid for our freedoms today with their blood.

Every year at this time, I take out an old Bible that belonged to my Great Grandmother.  She and my dad spent part of the war in a forced labour camp (it was a hostage type situation that effectively forced dad's parents to toe the line with the occupiers).  Anyway, my great-grandmother over time became the camp burial woman and she would record the names of the dead in this book.  I know these are victims, not veterans but these were lives that were taken and I try not to forget them along with all the others who served and lived before me.

God Bless Them All.

I currently work for Veterans Affairs Canada in Charlottetown. I used to work for 7 years for Department Of National Defence in Downsview.

I have heard stories weekly/daily all year long /every year of the sacrifice of war. WW1 to Iraq.

My most personal remembrance is of my Father. He fought in Korea.

Remembrance doesn't start or stop with Remembrance day for some.

 - received today from MND

Remembrance Day Message

This year, Canada mourned the passing of John "Jack" Bab****, our last known veteran of the First World War.  His passing signified the end of an era in Canadian military history and, as such, was marked with a solemn ceremony at the National War Memorial on April 9th, Vimy Day.

Mr. Bab****s passing illustrates the reason why we need to pause on Remembrance Day to recognize the sacrifices and achievements of our veterans and honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in serving their country.

The 620,000 men and women who served in the Canadian Forces in the First World War of which 67,000 gave their lives and 173,000 were wounded have now all passed; their voices silent. Every year, the ranks of Second World War and Korean War veterans get smaller.  But, their legacy lives on in the values and principles we hold dear; freedom, democracy, the rule of law and human rights.

Their torch has been passed to us, and our solemn duty is to remember they sacrificed their lives for Canada and the world.  It is the generations of warriors past who won us our nationhood, won us our eminent standing on the world stage, and forged a nation of honourable, dedicated and caring people who rise to the defence of the oppressed.

Those brave Canadians of years past earned respect, both at home and abroad, for their dedication and commitment to peace and security.  Theirs is a legacy passed on through the years that Canadian Forces members can proudly embrace.  I'm humbled and proud to be associated with Canada's brave men and women in uniform who continue to make sacrifices in the name of freedom."

Lest we forget.

His name should not be censored. He is a Canadian hero.
JOHN "JACK"      B A B C O C K

Beautiful stuff...thanks for sharing fellas!.
Nice to see so many here understand!.

As I think I've noted here before, both my Gramps were in WW1..
In the mid 70's a few years after he'd passed away I was fortunate to save my one Gramp's kit bag when my Grandmother was tossing it!.
It's very complete and includes his original WW1 leather dog-tags, helmet, putties, untensils, metal mirror and more also his personal diary even letters from Mom!.
Each time I go through it I can't help but feel unworthy also see more clearly how today's generation has 'slipped' in soooo many ways..

Sorry if I've posted this here before too but a cool addition to this story is both my Gramps came home on the White Star liner Olympic, sistership of and built beside the Titanic w/ the same blueprints..
When my folks got together and my Grandparents met, my Gramps obviously shared their wartime experiences and realized they were both on the same exact voyage home on the Olympic!.
My one Gramps showed the other a pic of him and his pals taken on the ship on their way home and sure enough who's in the background of the same picture...yep, my other Gramp!.

A heartfelt thank you and salute to all who've offered their all for their country!!!
