RE: Rememberance Day

Very good stories guys, thanks for sharing.

This summer, our town and community honoured one of our local WWII veterans by naming a road after him. The nice part about this is that he is still alive and very active in the community. I know him well and see him almost daily. Though he doesn't talk about the war, seeing him is my reminder of the men and women who serve and have served this great country. Thanks to all of you.

Cameron, what a wonderfully touching story. I have to admit that it put a major lump in my throat, as well as Pete,s story. You two guys have personal family ties with people that fought for our great country. You both must be so incredibly proud. Sadly we live in a very different world today. What happened in WW1 and WW2 would never happen today. Now wars are started and people go fight, for all the WRONG reasons. Cheers to all the men and women who gave for our country. George.

Very meaningful posts, thank you everyone.

I am not unlike the rest, Both grandfathers served in WWI, both wounded in action in France. Herbert Davidson was shot on two separate occasions, sent to the rear patched up and returned to battle. Henry White suffered serious shrapnel wounds to his legs and I always remember the little black spots in Grandpa's legs, you see he took a lot of shrapnel to his grave. Robert White, my great uncle Killed in action, France. Harry White Stoker First Class RCN, my dad, plied the North Atlantic on Corvettes and Minesweepers.

Two of my Aunts married Americans they met during WWII here in Canada, both turned out to be career USMC. Colonel Melvin McCory USMC, one tour of duty Viet Nam, Sgt. Major Jack Janaul, Purple Heart - Korea, Two tours of duty Viet Nam and Purple Heart Viet Nam.

For our family remembrance day is a way of life. Tomorrow morning at 10:45 am I will be at the Cenotaph in East York, Ontario with my son, it's the least we can do to honour and thank those that gave us the wonderful life we lead here in Canada.

One of my friends posted this on facebook and I'd like to share it here as well:

a veteran is someone, who at one point in their life, wrote a blank check
payable to Canada for an amount up to, and including, their life. That
is beyond honor, and there are way too many people in this country who
no longer remember that fact. Lets all take that moment today to Remember & be Thankful !

Agree. I'm glad to see that a lot of young people seem to pay attention as well. We always brought our kids to the Remembrance Day parade from the time they we very young.

I remember last year watching a special discussing those who were the last to die in the moments leading up to the Armistice in 1918. I was just looking on Wikipedia and found the name of George Price, the last Commonwealth Soldier to die just 2 minutes prior to the Armistice going into effect.
