MUNCIE (MAYBE)


I`AM GOING TO LOOK AT A MUNCIE TRANSMISSION TONIGHT!WHAT SHOULD I BE LOOKING FOR WHEN I PUT THE SIDE COVER OFF,OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT I SHOULD KNOW TO STAY AWAY FROM IT..ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

Reverse gears, way in the back. They are usually pretty much toast on Muncies.

Brass syncro rings. It's hard to explain the difference between thick (new) and thin (worn out) on them without a picture of the two side by side.

Back side of the input shaft. The teeth on there farthest back are usually very worn.

It's a bit of a gamble buying any used 4 speed. You just have to take a chance sometimes.

Do you know details on it? Casting numbers, etc? M20, M21, M22?

the casting #on the main body is 3925660 and the date on the pad is p8s01 and has 2 rings on the input shaft.from my research it looks like it`s a m20 built nov.1st 1968 he also said that it has a tag on the cover with #9793329 i`am not getting much luck on that..

Everything Carl said plus look for worn "teeth" on the brass synchro rings, as well as worn bearings.

Also check the countershaft hole at the front of the case. These are a press fit when new. Years of hard driving will pound out the bore and cause leaks. This can be repaired but it wouldn't be cheap. Then the obvious stuff like chipped teeth, cracks etc.

Difficult to check for any bad bearings because these things are so sloppy even when fresh.

I'd say do it then. When I was in my 20's a buddy drag raced a 62 Nova post car with a 327, Saginaw 4 speed and slicks. The car ran around high 12's I think. We all laughed when he said he was going to try it and from what I recall he ran that thing a few years like that, powershifting and all. Never broke it I don't think. I'm still not a Saginaw fan but I had to admit some respect for them after I saw that.
