Can anyone tell me why the Leafs shoot the puck in the corner 90% of the time when they cross the blue line??? I'm not a hockey fan, but, when I do watch a game "this drives me NUTS" The opposing teams, take a shot at the "GOAL" am I missing something here, thought the idea was to try & put it  in the net, not the corner???

Usually when a team is having trouble rather than carry or pass the puck into the offensive zone a "dump in" play where the puck is shot into the corner is utilised. In perfect execution the winger would be skating hard enogh to arrive in the corner and gain puck possession. A dump in play can also be used when you have the lead and are trying to keep the lead late into the game. Getting the puck deep into the offensive zone is never a bad play. It can also permit a change of players on the fly.

Seems whenever Habs put on a big pre-game it inspires the opposition more than it does the Habs.
Tonight it was more 100th anniv plus the intro of the Grey Cup champs.

They are turning the old Maple Leaf Gardens into a grocery store so that the players will feel at home in their new line of work.

Maple Leaf Gardens is coming to life again as the new home of Ryerson University's athletic centre and a new street-level Loblaws grocery store.

The iconic building will also host hockey games again as the home of the Ryerson Rams.

With the university already prepared to spend $20 million with increased student fees, the federal government announced today they would also chip in another $20 million towards Ryerson's $60 million share of the project.

"On behalf of generations past and present, we are proud to be investing in the historic redevelopment of Maple Leaf Gardens," said federal finance minister Jim Flaherty.

The upper floor of the revitalized Gardens will house Ryerson's new facilities,

They include:

A NHL-sized rink

A four-lane, 200-metre running track

Basketball and volleyball courts

1,200-capacity bleachers

A fitness centre

A high-performance gym

Food concessions

Classrooms

"This is more than a great day," said Ryerson's president Sheldon Levy. "It is a decisive moment in Ryerson's history, a true game-changer for our students and the return of Maple Leaf Gardens to Toronto."

At street level on the old ice surface will be a 70,000 square foot Loblaws grocery store, a Joe Fresh Style, and other retail stores.

There will be parking underground.
