The jobs dilemma

Is there a solution?

- Canadians want cheap goods
- in an effort to capture more market share, Company A exports jobs overseas
- due to cost savings, and therefore lower prices, Company A captures more market share
- Company B and Company C decide they'd better export jobs too
- their market share increases as a result
- Company A realizes that they need to lower costs even more, so they export as many service jobs as possible
- Company B and Company C follow suit
- product quality decreases
- service quality decreases
- however, compared to Canadian-employee-only companies, Company A, B and C continue to capture more market share
- as their market share increases, Canadian jobs decrease.....but Canadians want all that cheap crap

The dilemma? How to educate Canadians about the perils of shopping based on price alone? The education begins in all those Wal-mart parking lots. evileye

The first person to post the solution wins an all-expenses paid trip to Nirvana.

7thHeaven,
We are sitting with exactly the same dilema here in South Africa! Jobs are becoming scarce and pavement stalls increase by the day. 15% of the population is paying 90% of the tax!

Everybody is buying cheap imports because they cannot afford to buy local. There is a macro-economic solution to the problem! Lower the income tax to less than 4% so that the population can afford to pay for those services that are subsidised and abused. Let them pay for what they need. Government officials will lose their comfy jobs and really become productive by working for an honest wage! The 4% goes towards those services that cannot pay for themselves like the Defence force that nobody really needs if there are no politicians that are war mongers!

Unfortunately I know better yet still often succumb to the draw of lower prices. I try to support canadian whenever I can but it seems to be increasingly more expensive and more difficult to do so. I don't want to start a whole government/big business thing but it would be nice if there were more incentives to canadian companies to stay local and more done to discourage farming everything out to china.

Yeah, we're definately creating our own destiny.
Rightly or wrongly, I try to purchase only North American goods (regardless of it being Canadian or American.) This summer when faced with the option of either an American made water pump, or a Mexican, I paid the extra $30 for American. Upon recieving a radiator which I was told was North American made, turned out to be made in China. I returned it and went with a recore of the existing. Also went with the TA's as I believe they are only manufactured in NA (although I went with an American distributor as opposed to local.)
Three vehicles we own are a 03 CTS, 02 Montana, 66 Beau. While I don't think they are better built than the Japanese etc, they are however NA.
What bothers me is the items made in China that because they are packaged in Canada, make no mention of being made in China.
I try not to buy German products because of WW1 and WW2 as it bothers me that they tried for world domination twice! Yeah I've got issues, yet I am the furthest thing from being racist etc. I just don't want any one country to have too much control.

PS I've only been into a Walmart twice ever. Once as it had a particular sled that my daughter wanted for Christmas. (99% sure it was a product of China.) Second was when I had a craving for a McD meal.

Our standard of living is too high to support low paying manufacturing jobs. We need to start investing in brain power, not manpower.

Maybe the Federal Gov't should impose offshore import Taxes on  products entering Canada that are in competition with products produced here. Just to kind of even the playing field! Also when companies fold their tent and leave Canada for other countries to save $$$$$$ then "TAX THE HELL" out of them when they want to sell their products back in Canada (RANT).  Quality and country of origin should come first when considering a purchase, but it's all about "price". I am also guilty.

If we had policies in place, we wouldn't have to worry about price, availability, etc... No problems before the late 70's early 80's. Government has to stand up for this country at some point. Stop letting others across the oceans dictate about how Canada should "do this or that"! It's time for a change that's for sure.

Walmart Canada raises a record $850,000 for Juno Beach Centre

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Nov. 10 /CNW/ - Walmart Canada announced today that its
recent "Give thanks! Give a dollar" campaign in support of the Juno Beach
Centre in Normandy, France raised a record $850,000. The Juno Beach Centre
represents the war effort made by all Canadians, civilians and military
alike, both at home and on various fronts during World War II.
During Walmart's national campaign, which ran from October 8 - 22 in all
313 stores across the country, customers were asked to purchase a $1 icon.
The campaign generated $850,000 including $260,000 from Walmart Canada's
matching grants. This year's fundraising drive will add to the more than $7
million Walmart Canada has raised and contributed in funding and marketing
support for the Juno Beach Centre since 2003.
As the charter corporate sponsor of the Juno Beach Centre, Walmart Canada
has been part of the Juno Beach Centre from the beginning. "The Canadians who
served during World War II played a vital role in ensuring the freedoms that
we enjoy in Canada today," said Randy Gerrie, regional vice-president for
Walmart Canada and Juno Beach Centre board member. "Walmart Canada is proud
to honour Canada's veterans and to do its part to preserve the memories and
lessons for future generations."
Funds raised will be used to fund two exhibit rooms at the Juno Beach
Centre, the Canada Today Room, which showcases the diversity of our country
in the new millennium, and a temporary exhibit room which houses a variety of
ever-changing displays.
"With Remembrance Day tomorrow, Canadians will both honour our veterans
and military heroes and help to preserve our history," said Garth Webb, a
D-Day veteran and the current president of the Juno Beach Centre. "The Juno
Beach Centre was built with support from Walmart Canada and its customers and
we are extremely grateful for their generosity and continued support."

Yes, all we need is a little education....

That is exactly what the "Apartheid" Government did and we had a high standard of living!  Since 1994 all that changed and while the ranting about "apartheid" still goes on in parliament, Locals are wishing the good old days would return!

Stable yuan critical for China

NANJING (China) - CHINESE Premier Wen Jiabao said Monday the stability of the Chinese yuan was 'critical' to his nation's economy after a meeting with top European Union leaders.

Mr Wen said 'to maintain the stability of the renminbi (yuan) exchange rate is critical to China's economic stability.' His comments came after top European economic and finance officials on Sunday urged a 'gradual and orderly' appreciation of the yuan.

'We discussed the exchange rate policy, the de facto peg of the yuan,' Jean-Claude Trichet told reporters at a briefing after Sunday talks between EU officials and Wen in the eastern city of Nanjing.

He said officials encouraged Beijing to take 'a more flexible policy,' adding 'it seems it would be appropriate.' The yuan's exchange rate is one of the thorniest trade issues between China and the European Union.

When Chinese officials talk about keeping the yuan's value 'stable", they are typically referring to maintaining its current value.

The Chinese currency has been effectively pegged to the US dollar since the summer of 2008, and Europe fears the euro's resultant rise against the yuan will hurt EU exports to China and slow the continent's economic recovery. -- AFP

There was some hope earlier this year the Chinese would let the yuan float a little, but it doesn't look that way today. To have it rise is the only way we'll ever see our manufacturing return. They're obviously locking it artificially low so they can maintain the unfair advantage of dirt cheap labour and manufacturing. Imop, we simply cannot compete on price in the consumer goods sector as things sit right now. The goods coming out of china must start to go up in price if we're to have any hope. Our high dollar just makes it worse.

Tax the hell out any offshore goods! make it the same price as if you made it here. More jobs as importing makes less economic sense, get the ball rolling. We have so many resources that we are letting other nations exploit! ( find a canadian owned timber giant!,Or who is exploiting the tar sands? B.P!!!) we should kick-em out and do it ourselves! You want wood for building materials? No problem we'll mill it here! Sell the finished product, not the raw lumber! *(how many 2x4 do you need? 1,000,000? no problem, we'll cut'em up for ya! This country, with our space, resources,(INCLUDING lumber, fishing, fresh water, oil, natural gas, etc...) should be BY FAR the wealthiest nation in the world! We should have No un-employment problem here, no povrity here! Like the Swiss, a new policy should be implemented right away, IF YOU WEREN'T BORN HERE YOU CAN NEVER BECOME A CITIZEN. That means if you immigrate here no problem, but you can never vote. Problem solved. But what are you gonnna do? I'd get shot before I ever got elected.
