New Hauler for me.

I think I have finally found a solution to my towing and hauling situation.  I missed not being able to occasionally haul two cars and I was looking for a way to haul one of my cars and the travel trailer at the same time.
I hope my new purchase will solve that problem for me.  If all goes as planned, I hope to put the 62 convertible on the back of this thing and pull my travel trailer to Florida this winter.  There are a lot of car events happening Jan.-April, while we are in Florida and I enjoy having an old car down there to drive around.
I won't have much time to work on it prior to leaving for Florida but next spring I hope to paint the bed and add a few more accessories to dress it up and make it a little more user friendly.

That is really cool I would like a hauler like that for my derby cars some day could put on the truck and one on a trailer.

I own a Dodge Diesel Dually Quad Cab, SLT automatic, I have hung on to it for the last several years just wishing I could find one of these trucks for the right price, so I could extend the frame and mount one of these Hodges ramp beds on the back.
What I found, is people use these things until they die and then reuse the bed on another truck.  I could not find an old worn out truck to salvage the ramp bed for use on my Cab & Chassis.
You guys in the north would not like my setup because I don't need 4WD and see no reason to haul the extra weight and moving parts around.
I found this one ready to roll with everything I needed and in running, driving condition for the price most guys wanted for a standard cab with an old gas hog motor and 3 spd trans.
The one down side to this deal is, I know the Duramax will not run with or last as long as my Cummins.  The 6.5 turbo diesel in this new truck has 150,000 miles on it and that is quite often the life expectancy of that motor.  The seller says it runs good with no problems, so we shall see how many more miles I can wring out of it.
My Dodge Cummins has 263,000 miles and absolutely shows no signs of giving it up anytime in the near future.  The trans is totally rebuilt for towing and that was the weak point of that truck.
Wish me luck, I'm going to have it checked over, change the fluids and head south early in Jan.  Hopefully with my 62 Convertible on the back.
I may very well try an idea I have been kicking around for several years.  My neighbor owns a small boat, marina type business although not on the water.  As part of his winter services, he offers shrink wrapping for the boats.  The paint on my convertible is almost 30 years old, so it has seen better days.  I may load my car on the ramp truck, cover it with a couple old blankets and have him shrink wrap it for the trip to Florida.  Once I arrive, I will simply cut it off and enjoy the car for 90 days.  When I return in April, the weather should be nice enough to carry the car without a cover.  That is unless I sell it while in Florida.  I'll let you know what happens, Norm

I'm confused Norm.

You talk about a Duramax, a Cummins and a 6.5. This truck is a 6.5 by the look of the front bumper. Are you saying you have a Duramax as well? I think I understand that you have another truck with a Cummins.

At any rate I would disagree with you about the Cummins being better than the Duramax. Our dealership has sold many and we still have not seen one fail. Some of the ones around have over 300,000 miles on them. Not kilometers, miles.

Anyway, make sure you keep a close eye for coolant in the oil in the 6.5. Is it a manual trans or auto?

I guess it is that age thing Carl.  The new (to me) ramp truck is a 97 with the 6.5 turbo diesel and an automatic.
The truck I have used for the last 8 years to haul classic and antiques all over the U.S. and Canada is my 98 Dodge Diesel Dually 24v Cummins.  I bought this truck in Texas and have stored it every winter since I have owned it, so it is in excellent condition with 263k.  It is a 2WD truck because I never had to worry about traction when I used it.
I used the term Duramax because I thought that was correct for the 97 truck I just purchased.  I have never really kept up with the GM diesels once I decided to buy a Cummins.
I believe the seller of the 97 truck also referred to it as a Duramax on the auction.
Please set me straight if I'm using an incorrect name for this motor.
thanks, Norm

Duramax is from 2001 only

The Duramax is General Motors' diesel engine family for large trucks, designed by Isuzu. The 6.6 liter Duramax is produced by DMAX, a joint venture between GM and Isuzu in Moraine, Ohio. This engine was initially installed in 2001  Chevy and GMC trucks and has been the engine of choice since that time.

In 2006, production at Moraine was reportedly limited to approximately 200,000 engines per year. On May 9, 2007, DMAX announced the production of the 1,000,000th Duramax V-8 Diesel Engine at its Moraine facility.
