i run a 10 bolt 8.2 posi, with 4:56 gears behind a 450hp sbc on ET street tires (so no tire spin!) for many many years, it does hold up, but after 43 years it wants to be refreshed!!
if you have more than 3/4" clearance per side you'll be able to fit a later style wide rear in there...

I have a 64 Sd with a Posi 10 bolt but I hate to wreck it with my driving habits in the car that I want to put it in.
Thanks for the info. I had a line on a complete car for cheap. The fact that the rear end is 1.5" wider means it's a no-go. Still on the search for a narrow 12 bolt. Why did I have to pick such a hard car to find parts for??
They are hard to find. I finally picked up a 12 bolt for a 68 and up chevelle. I cut the ends off and welded on Ford ends for the right width. I then picked up a 31 spline moser eaton posi and axles with the ford bearings from racing junk. I cut off the cup to hold the springs and welded in a flat plate with the hole for the retainer bolt from my 10 bolt. Now I have a very nice strong diff with no c-clips. All for about $1,100.00 complete
I did not read every post but you can use the wider 68 and up diff. You just need to adjust backspace on the wheels to fit

Do you have 14" steel wheels on your car now? You would think the narrow steel wheels wouldnt have a problem with the extra 3/4" width... i've been looking for a 67 12 bolt, around $1500 seems to be the going rate, a bit more and i'd expect it to be fully rebuilt... there's been a '68 housing for sale locally for a year for $400... 67 is a single year only diff and the harder one to find, if you do use it you just need to buy 67 springs...
my 10 bolt is making a bit of noise, so i'd rather find a 12 then sink $1000 into mine....

I have the original 14's on the car now and that's what I run. I just don't know if a 68-72 will fit in the fenders. I want too keep two rear ends. One with a highway gears and the other with a 4:11. As for the 10 bolts if you keep them a non posi they last but with the posi they go boom.
I used a 10 bolt with a posi and 3.73 gears before I built my 12 bolt. It held up fine with my 406. Granted I never did put the slicks on with the 10 bolt and go to the track but it held up fine for many high rpm burnouts and launches with the ta radials. If you are just running street tires on the street and your rear is set up properly I am sure you will be fine.
1 is for my 68 SD, I looked long and hard for that 1, the buick , I saved from the crusher, had a 350 2 bbl engine , 12 bolt with sway bar?? rusted to the door handles ( must have been a eastern car LOL !! . Funny how they optioned them. Monte was sitting on a farm for 7 years, we were looking at the old stuff , and that was in the line up , bought it to part out for the disc brakes and 12 bolt, of course being in a Monte . it's a peg leg 2.73.
and of course,, I've collected a posi for each series now.
I swear,,, I've become very good at collecting, not building. so good in fact , that I am building 30 x 40 cold storage this spring to house my 'junk'. the big brown spot is where it will go in spring.
that's why I changed my signature to collector!

Could have had a 2.73 open 12 bolt from a 70 Monte Carlo for $200.00 last spring. Should have bought it but I don't have an A body, and I already have a 12 bolt from a 69 Chevelle. I didn't need another; I can't store all of the stuff I have now.
