1975 Chevrolet Kommando (Holden Premier)(Chevelle)

Hullo to all my Canadian Poncho friends. This topic will be running for some time and include the engine detail that you have assisted with.

This is a South African built car 1974-1975 based on the Australian Holden that in its turn was based on the Chevelle!!!biggrin  These photos were taken where I found the car in June this year and with time I will be able to give you a pictorial as the restoration progresses.  The junk came out of the car , including some condoms!no

The next set of photos will be of the strip-down and "Big Wash"

Looks something like a Vega front end with a full-size '69 Chevy style rear bumper.

Could be!!! That is why GM parts are known for their interchangeability!  My 65 Malibu 250 cid Starter motor fits on a 1983 305 V8 with no problem!biggrin

Hey Johann,

Did you see the Eric Bana's documentery movie about his Falcon GT?

There was some great scenes in it, of (what I think) was a Holden Commando taken during a Targa Tazmania a few years ago.

Hullo everybody,
Hope that you and your family all have a prosperous 2010.

Came across something interesting. Having hassles with the wiring on the 700 4R box, I bought a TH350 box for $350 and got an engine with it!
A 92 Buick 231 V6! Casting number 1261787.  Has an Edelbrock Performance intake manifold and electronic ignition.
Anybody know anything about this engine?  First time I see one!confuse
Will take some pics tomorrow, my rechargeable batteries packed up after 5 yrs.

To me the Buick 231 V6 is pretty much in the same category as a small block chevy V8. One of the best engines GM ever made. It was licenced to Jeep over the years and even powered mid to late 60's Jeeps.

From Wiki:

The Buick V6, initially marketed as Fireball at its introduction in 1962, was a large V6 engine used by General Motors. The block is made of cast iron and all use two-valve-per-cylinder iron heads, actuated by pushrods.

The 3800 was on the Ward's 10 Best Engines of the 20th century list, and is one of the most-produced engines in history. To date, over 25 million have been produced.

In 1967, GM sold the design to Kaiser-Jeep. The muscle car era had taken hold, and GM no longer felt the need to produce a V6, considered in North America an unusual engine configuration at the time. The energy crisis a decade later prompted the company to buy the design back from American Motors (AMC), who had by that point bought Kaiser-Jeep, and the descendants of the early 231 continue to be the most-common GM V6.

Though the pre-3800 RWD V6 uses the BOP bellhousing pattern that it inherited from its aluminum V8 ancestor, an oddity of both the FWD and RWD 3800 V6 is that although it is a 90° V6, it uses the GM 60° V6 bell housing. For use in the RWD applications, the bellhousings on both the manual and automatic transmissions are altered slightly.

Thanks 73SC,
If the engine is OK, then I will link  it up with the 700 4R box and look at another project!  I like the Edelbrock manifold and have a DualJet that should fit.

I don't think the 700 bolt pattern is correct for the 231 Johann. You better check before you plan on doing that.

Thanks for the info Carl,
I have not measured it but it looks a lot the same. The engine comes from an Australian Commodore and the box is a TH350. Will take some pics tomorrow and we can debate it.
It is now nearly midnight and I must have my beauty sleep!

See you tomorrow!

Sounds like the Aussies have the right bellhousing to do the job.

Ok, maybe I didn't understand your post correctly.

GM has two different bolt patterns for the transmissions. Chevrolet engines have one pattern, Buick, Olds and Pontiac have another pattern. A few transmissions are cast with both patterns but I don't think TH350 or 700-4R ever had both patterns so you have to make sure the trans is from the correct style engine.

In your case with the 231 being a Buick, there will be a TH350 with the right pattern available.

Hullo Carl and all the friends,
I may have bought a LEMON!!!

You are right the housing is different.  About 20 mins ago I tried to turn the motor and I heard a clanging sound in the sump. Looks like there has been some parts exchange!

I will see if it is re-buildable and place the set-up in an old Wolseley.!!!!  By the way, What carb did they fit??  The Rochester does not fit.

Morning all!
Have been rather busy at work! Had 10" of rain from Monday to Friday! Really sparked to get everything back under roof. Floor is  clean again for a while!
The Buick V6 is on hold for now. Body work on the Kommando down to the bare body.  Bought two doors and got an el Camino with it!  Looks like restoration is contagious.  My Chemist told my wife to be glad I bring cars home and not be like Tiger!  Enjoy the picsbiggrin

Great progress pictures Johann! Whenever I think we have a tough time finding parts for our cars in North America, you make me appreciate how easy we have it. I cannot imagine how limited your resources must be. You define "determination". Keep the photos coming.

Thanks for the comment.  Fortunately some of the guys are prepared to swop out or sell at a reasonable price.  The problem comes when you need to import with our poor exchange rate. The resources are there, you need the $$$$$!

The only item that I have not yet found is the two SS stickers that are placed on the front fenders. I was lucky in finding the V8 badges in the cubby of the el Camino!

Hullo Brian,
Owning that model el Camino is like having a 65 Z16 here in South Africa.  They command a premium price especially if it is a V8 Auto. (This one is a V8 Auto) I must just be patient and finish the Kommando.  The 65 Malibu that is currently a daily driver will then be used for special occassions only. Then the el  Camino! Funny how cars start coming to youbiggrin

Hulo CdnPont,

Yes Thank You. The body is nice and smooth, only problem is the Malibu badge that is slightly bent.  I'm  afraid to straighten it. Not too obvious.
