RE: Canadiana...60 - 70's music. Post your faves!!

OK I'm going to bring this thread back to life!  This is The Rodeo Song from Alberta in about 1979!  Be advised some of the language is a little strong.  If you ever want a bizarre experience you should listen to the version released for radio play.  All they did was bleep out the cuss words.  There wasn't much left!

I loved that goofy rodeo song! It hit Ontario in 80', and we all used to sing it at the top of our lungs. We loved the cuss words. I can still remember the words to it, funny how what was acceptable then would never have a chance of making the airwaves today.

Speaking of Elvis wink this one's written by two Canadians (David Tyson and Christopher Ward formerly of Much Music) in a Memphis hotel room, and sung by another Canadian. And, it's all about the King of Rock n' Roll. And, bonus, it's even got a '61 Caddy in the video.

Didn't know that, did ya. wink

OK here's another one from the actual 70's (the 1870's that is)

This is a salute to Kate McGarrigle who died recently and sang this with her sister Anna.

Those are two beauties eh Ken. I was lucky, my dad worked for Phillips Electronics so we had a giant 26" Colour TV console back in about 1965, remember those babies with the beautuful cabinets and speakers on each side. We always had a big Hi Fi too another solid piece of furnture.

We lived in the sticks so we watched a lot of snow trying to make out what was actually going on. (I wonder what kids would think of that now)

My dad splurged and bought a huge Phillips stereo in 1965 with walnut sliding panels over the 12 inch speakers.  What a beauty!   A huge rack of square push buttons along one side that did anything you wanted!  I  spent many hours hunkered over that thing playing my pathetic collection of records (until I got my eight track player!)

Still in my dad's basement.  You want it?  its just too huge for me.

Geez, that sounds just like the stereo we had , you describe it almost to a T. Was the speaker cloth a combo maroon and black lines? Ours was.

Yeah it was kinda like tweed I guess.  it was the "top of the line"  according to my dad who "wanted a good record player for once!"

Too bad we lived too far out of the city to ever actually get to use the FM radio.

i remember now that he actually hauled it back from Edmonton over gravel roads for three hours in the back of our new 66 Parisienne four door. He had to take the seat out and pull off the door handles and arm rests to get it to fit.  Even so i remember him telling me the doors would only close on the first latch.

Still it came home in style!

No question about it we had the same model! It had a lot of guts as I recall, my Dad was in the Navy during WWII then he played in the Toronto Scottish pipes and drums after with my uncle. Needless to say he loved blasting the Military Tatoo albums on that thing. I have to admit it rubbed off on me too.

Does anyone in the Toronto area remember the Q107 Home grown contest. a friend had entered for the album cover contest , think he came third.

anyhow I could not find what I was looking for on youtube.

I think one of the bands in the 80's was Oliver heavyside, but memory is not what it used to be.

Man I loved the Forrest Rangers too, right after school, you are right!

Hey George Oliver is a great showman, I know him from back in the day, haven't seen him for 15 years but he brings it....he used to own the Blue Note in Yorkville and he did a few gigs for me too.

Here's another snippet from a show some of you may remember on CBC in the 60's after school.  Let's Sing Out with Oscar Brand, the Chapin brothers (including a guy named Harry) and young Roberta Anderson from Saskatoon.

She became rather well known under another name and judging from how good she was and how good her self-written song was its no surprise eh?

Well nobody picked up on Chilliwack, so sit back and enjoy. I'll post a few...

Just a side note. I've been singing in a band the past year and it's funny because just like this site, they prefer Canadian. We do a ton of Canadian cover songs, and you know what, it's great because it's different yet familiar.

Good one!   I remeber seeing those guys as a opener for Santana in about 73 and to tell you the truth I liked them better. (Carlos was into his religious stuff)

Raino was the coolest song they did I think
It goes well real late at night.
