I've got a stock '66 Beaumont with a 327. Currently I have your basic aftermarket chrome air cleaner (which I can't stand) with the exposed paper fillament. I am looking to replace it with something black with a dual snorkel. I'm considering the stock single snorkel setup, but do think it may be a step back as far as "breathe-ability". Therefore, I'm also considering a black dual snorkel as found on the '70 Camaro. (Would even consider a dual snorkel 60's-70's from an Olds or Buick, which I've seen a few of on ebay.) I like the Chevy L79 dual snorkel, but don't like the chrome (or the price). Do they come in black? Any suggestions, or concerns I should be aware of would be appreciated. Thx

this is funny, I was about to ask the same thing. I like the L79 and the dual short snorkel on some big blocks. I have thought about making one from a couple 327 oem air cleaners? Do you or anyone know is the 283 4v air cleaner the same as the 327? I will be interested to know what others have to say.
what carb do you have? If a quadrajet you should get a housing that has the tabs that fit around the front of the carb. If an older series carb, the carb throat is a smaller diameter than a quadrajet. If a holley you'll need to find a housing that clears the float adjusting screws. Also, if you have an HEI distributor, you'll need to clear that.

That would be a good looking mod!
Re the type of carb, that's a good question. I'm hoping it will soon be a quadrajet...

I've been going to PM you on this subject as I was hoping your car was all original and you could tell me what the original 327/275 carb and intake setup was. I think long term I'd like to build that combination for my car, retaining the original style of my car as it is original but gaining the power that most of us crave. I thought if I could figure out what carb/intake/air cleaner is close to original I could add it to my 283 until I could afford to build a 327.
From research it seems depending on the build date that the 327/275 could have a Rochester, a Carter or even a Holley carb, and it can be confusing whether the intakes and air cleaners differed slightly for each carb. In addition to the carb you have spotted on Ebay, there are current listings for the other brands, claiming to be for the 1966 327/275 as well. There are two air cleaners listed currently on Ebay as well as a CP member offered one as a 396/325 as well. They seem to be close to the same. As far as a alternate with a dual snorkel, what about just flipping the lid of the original when the need for a little more power exists? Does anyone have a 1966 parts catalog that covers these engine models that would have part numbers or descriptions? I have the info for 1964-65 but they are different combinations than 1966.
I have used the stock single snorkle, a dual snorkle L79 air cleaner and a GM Performance open element air cleaner.
If you are interested in performance then the open element is the way to go. In my experience, the dual snorkle offers limited to no performance improvement over the stock single snorkle.
You can't beat the sound of that open element either, sounds like it is going to suck the hood in. I should point out to be fair that my hood is open dual scooped as well so it flows into that open element real well.
build yourself a dual snorkle 66 327 air cleaner, it would look original enough and would be cool, and give you that extra airflow your looking for.
not quite the same , but I built a dual snorkle for my wifes 83 olds cutlass wagon, ducted it like a ram air set up ,, honestly was good for 1 MPG improvement.
my 2 cents.

The question from me would be on a 1966 Beaumont built in January 1966 with a 327/275 Powerglide, what would be the carb make, model and part number, the intake and part number and the air cleaner and part number and whether the intake and air cleaner would have to be specific to the carb.
Remember this isn't a burning question, final assembly of a 327 to be installed in a 1965 Canso takes precedent over my trivial questions.......summer is almost here!!!!!
I went to the parts books which lots of you guys have.
Intake manifold
66 First design 3931575 with Rochester carb
66 Second design 3888886 with Carter carb
Carb
66 w/327 powerglide 4028S Carter
66 w/327 powerglide 7036683 superseded by 7036684>>>>service # 7026202
Air cleaner
66 w/327 3398236
Now, using what I've been taught during 29 years of doing GM parts, your car would be a second design because it's made in January. For years GM preached that design changes were made Jan 1 unless a special notation was made of a specific date. With that said, I've shot that theory down many times over the years!
Regarding the Canso---I take Sundays off, so this is all good. I never work in the garage on a Sunday. At best, I will go in there and wander around planning my week but it's rare for me to open the tool box on Sunday so you picked the perfect day! Sunday is usually my research day...

How about somthing a little different by these guys? Out beyond a regular air cleaner setup. I don't think you can do any better cold air induction, and if done right could look almost factory. Company is in Hamilton Ontario no less! Check out the installs.

Cool stuff. They almost look like those old batwing's that were on some of the old Caddy's. (They don't seem to have kits for the older Beau/Chevelles, but I'll drop them a line to confirm.) thx

I'm going to do the same as the 69 Parisienne setup on my 66 Cad. Fab up a dual snorkel made from 2 singles but then run ducting out to the grill for some cold air benefits. It may not look 100% stock but it works.

cool... from what i've read, the camaro and chevelle one are different. the chevelle one is rarer and worth more, and someone does reproduce the camaro one... i dont know enough about these to tell which one this is off of...
Did you look at the Ram Air Box website? They have some other interesting ones!! I wish there was someone local who stocked one of each style so that i could try out the look and fit on my car before buying one...

I did look. Some neat stuff. Agreed that it would be nice to see it in person. Lately I've been looking on ebay for filters. Must say, there are some neat old ones from GM's like old Buicks, Olds etc. I'm going to keep looking. (On a related note, is there anything that feeds to the grille's on any of the after market BB hoods?)
