back to the rebuild - how much is this costing you ??

We agreed on $2,050 for the engine and $850 Re & Re. I also had a quote on an exchange engine at $1,650 with Re & Re $1,200 and the selling dealer, City where I also bought Cadillacs came in after talking to the Principal at $3,000 for a GM engine and $1,700 Re & Re.  I could have purchased a warrantied salvage yard engine as well and saved about $1,000 with Tony, but I like my choice, especially now that we are using the original block.

We will see in a few days how things turn out, hard decision to make, but with five vehicles there was no gun to my head so I took my time deciding what to do. How many shops would let you come in a take photos like Tony did, that attitude and level of customer service goes a long way with me.

Wow Ray that sounds very reasonable.  I can see that he'd have a very busy shop if he can keep prices at that level.  Don't see many shops under a 100 an hour now so it sure doesn't take long to add up.  I think you've made a good choice.  You have to look at that's just a few lease payments that alot of people are making.  Thing is yours won't continue for the 3 or 4 years.

I agree, it sounds like a good shop, good reputation, good price.

Tony said that in the hey day he had 8 guys building engines but now it is just him and one employee helping. He told me that what keeps bread on the table is the  arrangements he has worked out with the dealers to handle their engine work.  I told him about the City price and he said, even if you take it to them it's going end up in my shop.

I think this meets Hillars definition of a fair price.

Carl, do you have a 5.3 or 6.0 litre Vortec in your Sub?

The 5.3 and 6.0 is based on the "new" LS  small block and the 5.7 Vortec is the last version of the original 1955 small block. What is the largest bore a 350 can take without handgrenading? It's 30 0ver for 5.8, that is fine with me.

I wouldn't walk across the street to get another 6 liter. I've got one in my 02 pickup and it's a pig. Supposed to be 300 horse but man they are only Shetlands at the best and to pull something up a hill you might as well get out and push. Besides that probably the best and nicest driving truck I've ever had and haven't put a penny in it except for tires in over 8 years. I'd want a 5.3 next time. My motorhome with a 454 got as good a gas mileage as my pickup (almost).

They certainly never won any fuel economy awards, you are right Jerel.

As far as repairs go, same experience at our dealership. Very low maintenance, high fuel bills!

Wow.. that disappointing to hear... My 01 6.0L is a jem  138,000 miles  get 11mpg with 8000lb trailer at 60mph  19 mpg at 50-55 empty  and 16-17 at 75 mph to N.B.   It pulled rough until I replaced original gas filter and plugs and wires..

07 Sub runs 24 mpg at 100 km  got 20 mpg at 75-80 mph to N.B. and back  its a 4x4 @6000 lbs   Its a rocket!   as is the 6.0L in the 2500HD (6500LBS)

I have a friend with a newer Sub with a 6.0 litre. When mine was running well he drove it one day and was shocked at how the 5.7 performed. He said no question my 5.7 felt like it had more grunt and power.

Age old adage is Torque is what you feel so maybe the 5.7 has more torque than the 6.0.

They must be bad ones or dogs, cause mine will pull better than any 5.7 I have ever seen...   the only truck that pulls better than mine is a 8.1L gasser... My body shop buddy has a reg cab 02 2wd and it runs real nice too   I guess they are like girls   all different.....

I'm probably pretty close to where you are when loaded at 11mpg and max out at around 18 on the highway but my 98 pickup before had the 350 with not a whole less power and I got 17-18 in town and around 24 on the highway.  I was dissappointed, I thought the newer technology would have shown improvement.  My 454 would get 12 mpg with it loaded with kids, bikes, water, and enough to live for 2 weeks and had a fair bit more power.  I expected better but I get really good rewards from my Shell card, I think it comes this month.

bought a 2000 2500 GMC new with the 6 litre. First trip north it got 12 MPG. I sold it when it was 6 years old with only 4600 km on it. Hated the gas milage. My beat up 95 Sonnoma 4X4 gets a solid 26 MPG. I bought a new 08 with the 5.3 in August of 08. Its still running on the same tank of gas I picked it up with. Maybe cause I have only put 125 km on it hmm. My 2001 Yukon has the 5.3 and is a great runner. The Roadmaster has the 5.7 LT1 with tons of power. I don`t know how others are but the Roadmaster & the Yukon have the piston slap. Hate listening to it when you start them.
