I just sent my rims out to be powdercoated, and was wondering on tire sizes. the fronts rims are 15 x 7" ralleys and the rears are 15 X 8" ralleys. according to the specs for the car it came with 15 X 6" and came with either F or G 78 x 15. i was figuring 225's for the front and 235's for the rear but not sure of profile heights. any recommendations. i do prefer the look of big and littles.
watch the width of the rear tires, as they may rub on the edge of the wheel opening. Also, too wide on the front and they'll rub on the inside of the wheel well. I'll get you the tire size of my 2 cars, the drivers side front rubs just a bit, and the rears are ok. I run 15 x 7 stock Chev ralley wheels.
Wider is better, but your back spacing on the rims becomes a factor...

I'm sure you could go as wide as 255's on the 8" wheels without clearance problems on a 69. I'd go 235 on the 7's and 245's on the 8's.
Why the different width's Stephen? Just what you had or do you like that profile?
Big cars often look better with same sizes, unless car is megapowered.. My car fills out the fenders with 225/75R-15 0n 8 inch rally 69 does have more room....
PS I've always "staggered" my tires. On my Beaumont I've gone with 15 in 235's on the front, and 255's on the rear. Both are 60 series. (I actually took it one step farther last year when on my CTS I actually went with 18 on the front and 19 on the rear. Reason being that the high trunk lid on the CTS makes the rear wheels looks small. The result is subtle enough that most people don't even notice the difference, which is ultimately what I wanted to achieve.)

staggered on a Acadian or Beaumont is defintely different than on a full size
A while back there was a 69(?) Impala SS on Ebay that had some wide rear rubber/steelies with dog dishes. Standard hight car. It looked great! (I wouldn't stagger rim diameters on the older cars though.)

225 70 15 TA radials on 15 by 8 Vette wheels rub the chassis on my 69 on full turn. There is lots of room in the rear for that same combo, but when I tried 275 60 15s on 15 by 8.5 Torque Thrusts a couple of years ago the tires rubbed the rear lip.

Do they rub because they're too high, or too wide? I'm guessing (and this is only a guess) that the 8" vs 7" probably have a 1/2" difference in the back space which means the 7" would give you 1/2" on both the inside and the outside? (Which is likely only a factor if you go with a narrower tire anyways.)

lots of opinions lol Some Poncho guys told me to put on whatever "I" liked
With my Torque Thrusts, the backspacing was the same for the 7" and the 8 1/2". With the 8 1/2's on the rear the would rub the lip.
I may be wrong, but if you have the same backspace then the entire 1.5" difference in rim width would be added to either the inside or the outside. I'm not meaning to hijack the thread, just that backspace and offset can have an impact on the size of tire that you can run. As you already have the rims and because they are not silly-wide, you will be able to find something that looks great! What I did was use the existing tires as a reference to determine how much taller and/or wider I could go. I also used the tire chart to compare the existing tires with what I felt I could increase by. Hope this somehow helps?...
PS I think that chart also has recomendations per tire to rim sizes...

I think it's the rim width - I don't think the same would occur with this tire on 7" rims.
just trying to find out what other folks have and what works. rims are at powdercoater right now, but do fit hubs and axles. I never had proper tires or rims on the car since i've acquired it. i had s10 14" snows on the back to roll around the shop with 15X7 on the front mounted with bald 225/75r 15 truck tire. i got a set of 15x8 rims for the back but never had tires on them. plus the front fender are in the attic. so i really don't know what will fit. thanxs for the chart. it did help me with tire to rim measurement.
I was at a friends shop today looking at a 64 ford truck that had 8" rim w/ 255x60r15 on the rear and 7" rim w/ 225x70r15 on the front. looked good. so i'm thinking 8" rim w/ 245x70r15 on the rear and 7" rim w/ 225x70r15 on the front. should have no clearance issues.
All depends on how you want the car to sit, I prefer mine lower so I run 235/60-15 front and 255/6015 rear on my 65 Impala with 1 coil cut, looks mean and still rides nice
play with the #'s on this website, personally , I'd go with 255/60/15 on the 8" and 235/60/15 on the 7". the thing that I like , and you have to remember is that the tires front and back will have the same profile~look. personally speaking, I think the 245 will look to rounded on an 8" rim compared to the 7" that will appear blocky.
my 2 cents...

I'd ditto that. That's what I'm going with on my Beaumont...
